The Sea Coast Echo is the official newspaper of Hancock County, Mississippi, founded in January 1892. The first Echo publisher was Charles G. Moreau, who co-owned the paper with business partner one-time Pass Christian Coast Beacon manager W.L. The newspaper has famously missed only two issues during its long history. One date was 1918 when the publisher's daughter succumbed to plague. The second

was in 1969 in the aftermath Hurricane Camille. History would not repeat itself in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina made Bay St. Louis and Waveland its ground zero: The newspaper was produced at a sister newspaper in Kentucky and trucked to the devastated Gulf Coast where residents were clamoring for local news. The paper is now owned by Alabama-based Lancaster Management Inc. It is published weekly on Wednesday.

MDEQ Lifts Beach Water Contact Advisories for Waveland and Gulfport West Beaches

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, through its Beach Monitoring Program, has lifted the beach water contact advisories for Waveland and Gulfport West Beaches.

Water samples at this station show the areas have reached acceptable bacteria levels. There are no beach water contact advisories on the Mississippi Gulf Coast currently.

Again, the ADVISORIES have been LIFTED for:

Waveland Beach -- the previously affected area is from Oak Blvd. east to Favre St. (Station 3)
Gulfport West Beach -- the previously affected area is from Marie Ave. east to Camp Ave. (Station 8)

Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming should not occur during or within 24 hours of significant rainfall.

More information about the Mississippi Beach Monitoring Program and the location of beach sampling stations is available here.

Our Story

The Sea Coast Echo is the official newspaper of Bay St. Louis and Hancock County, Mississippi, founded in January 1892. The first Echo publisher was Charles G. Moreau, who co-owned the paper with business partner one-time Pass Christian Coast Beacon manager W.L. May.

The Echo is the oldest business in Hancock County. The newspaper has famously missed only two issues during its long history. One date was 1918 when the publisher's daughter succumbed to plague. The second was in 1969 in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille. History would not repeat itself in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina made Bay St. Louis and Waveland its ground zero: The newspaper was produced at a sister newspaper in Kentucky and trucked to the devastated Gulf Coast where residents were clamoring for local news. The paper is owned by Alabama-based Lancaster Management Inc. and the general manager is Geoff Belcher. It is published weekly on Wednesday. Follow us on Twitter @TheSeaCoastEcho. #TheEcho
