The Rescue Device That Saved Shipwreck Victims Before Helicopters
Description:
Long before helicopters, rescue boats, and modern Coast Guard technology, shipwreck victims on Lake Erie often depended on a device called a breeches buoy.
Carried to the scene on a Beach Apparatus Cart, this life-saving system allowed rescuers to send stranded sailors from a wrecked vessel safely back to shore—one person at a time.
This historic breeches buoy is on display at the Lifesaving Station Museum at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park and serves as a reminder of the brave surfmen who risked their own lives to save others along Ohio's shoreline.

Tymochtee Solar Construction Continues Near Sycamore
"If we're building more solar power, why aren't electric bills going down?"
That's a question many people ask when they see projects like Tymochtee Solar taking shape along State Route 103 near Sycamore.

Construction continues on the 120-megawatt project, with steel posts now being installed across the site. Once completed, the project will cover approximately 1,900 acres, with about 800 acres occupied by solar panels.

Many people assume that new solar generation automatically means lower electric bills. The reality is more complicated.

Like most utility-scale solar projects, the electricity generated by Tymochtee Solar will be fed into the PJM regional power grid, which serves millions of customers across Ohio and several surrounding states. Once electricity enters the grid, it becomes part of a larger network supplying homes, businesses, manufacturers, schools, hospitals, and other major users of electricity.

One of the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand today is data centers. As cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services continue to expand, technology companies are consuming more electricity than ever before. Many of these companies have committed to supporting renewable energy projects through power purchase agreements and renewable energy credits to help offset their growing energy use and meet corporate sustainability goals.

While the electricity produced by Tymochtee Solar is not delivered directly to a specific data center, the rapid growth of data centers and other large industrial users has become a major driver behind the development of new renewable energy projects across the country.

The reality is that projects like Tymochtee Solar add generating capacity to the grid, but they do not automatically lower residential electric bills. Electric rates are influenced by many factors, including transmission costs, infrastructure investments, fuel prices, grid reliability requirements, and overall electricity demand.

Whether you support solar energy or oppose it, construction is moving forward, and Tymochtee Solar is steadily becoming one of the larger renewable energy projects in our region.

This is just a quick construction update, and SkyView Media will continue documenting the project's progress as work moves forward.

Tomorrow Could Be the Start of a New Opportunity
Just a reminder that JVIS will be hosting onsite hiring events this week at both its Tiffin and Bowling Green facilities.
Following the acquisition of the former Toledo Molding & Die operations, JVIS continues to invest in Northwest Ohio and is currently hiring for Operators, Maintenance Technicians, and Process Technicians on all shifts.
For many local families, manufacturing has provided stable careers and opportunities for generations. The transition from TMD to JVIS has helped preserve jobs in our region and created new opportunities for workers looking to build their future close to home.
As many of you know, SkyView Media LLC is community-focused. My goal isn't just to report the news, but to help showcase the people, businesses, and opportunities that make Northwest Ohio a great place to live and work. Whether you're looking for a new opportunity, considering a career change, or know someone who is, this may be worth checking out.
Good luck to everyone attending, and please share this post so others can see it.

More Than 350 Athletes Already Registered for Under Armour's Great Lakes Night of Stars in Tiffin
One of the most unique track and field events ever hosted in Tiffin is coming to Heidelberg University on Saturday, June 13.
Under Armour's Great Lakes Night of Stars will transform Hoernemann Stadium into a high-energy showcase featuring elite competition, smoke machine athlete introductions, collegiate pacers, post-race interviews on the infield, professional photography and videography, local food trucks, and some of the fastest high school athletes in the country competing under the lights.
Unlike a traditional track meet, organizers are creating a party atmosphere designed to celebrate the sport while giving athletes the opportunity to compete at their highest level. The featured elite sections will take place between 8 and 10 p.m. under the lights, creating an exciting environment for athletes and spectators alike.
The event is open to athletes graduating in 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 and will feature 20 boys and girls events, including the 100-meter dash, 100/110-meter hurdles, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, shot put, pole vault and high jump.
According to Meet Director and Heidelberg University Head Cross Country Coach Dan Simpson, more than 350 athletes have already registered to compete, with registration still open and additional entries expected before race day.
Registration remains open through Monday, June 8, 2026, and local athletes are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to compete against some of the top talent from across the Midwest and beyond. Whether you're chasing a personal best, looking to test yourself against elite competition, or simply want to be part of an unforgettable atmosphere under the lights, organizers welcome athletes of all ability levels.
The event will also provide athletes with an opportunity to compete in front of college recruiters, as organizers expect at least 20 college coaches and scouts to be in attendance. For athletes interested in continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level, the Great Lakes Night of Stars offers a valuable opportunity to gain exposure while competing against elite competition.
Athletes from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, New York, Virginia, Florida and potentially other states are expected to compete in what is quickly becoming one of the premier summer track and field meets in the Midwest.
One of the featured athletes expected to compete is Katy Zang, the national record holder in the 3200 meters and winner of both the 1600 and 3200-meter races at New Balance Nationals Indoor this past March. Zang captured national titles with impressive times of 4:35 in the 1600 and 9:42 in the 3200.
FinishTiming will provide fully automatic timing and live results throughout the meet, ensuring athletes receive accurate, professional-level results.
Athletes and families will also have the opportunity to participate in an optional Heidelberg University campus visit and tour earlier in the day, giving prospective students a chance to learn more about the university, meet coaches and explore campus before competition begins.
To help support the event, organizers are offering local businesses, organizations and families the opportunity to sponsor individual events. For just $50, sponsors can purchase naming rights to an event and have their family or business recognized during the competition. For example, an event could be announced as "SkyView Media Girls High Jump" before athletes take the field.
SkyView Media is proud to partner with Heidelberg University and Under Armour's Great Lakes Night of Stars to help promote this exciting event and provide aerial coverage of the competition. We look forward to showcasing the athletes, the atmosphere and the energy that will make this a memorable night for competitors and spectators alike.
Beyond the competition itself, the event is expected to have a positive impact on the local community. With hundreds of athletes already registered and many traveling with parents, coaches, siblings and supporters, Tiffin could see well over 1,000 visitors throughout the day and evening. Those visitors will be staying in local hotels, dining at area restaurants, purchasing fuel and supporting local businesses while experiencing everything the community has to offer. Events like this not only showcase Heidelberg University and Tiffin but also provide a meaningful economic boost to the community.
The Great Lakes Night of Stars will take place Saturday, June 13, from 5:00 p.m. until approximately 10:00 p.m. at Hoernemann Stadium on the campus of Heidelberg University, located at 138 Greenfield Street in Tiffin.

What If We Could Help Every Child Enjoy Summer at the Tiffin City Pool?
My recent article about things for kids to do in Tiffin generated quite a bit of discussion. While many people pointed out the parks, sports programs, library activities, and other opportunities available to local kids, one comment really stood out to me.
Several people mentioned that even though a season pass to the Tiffin City Pool is one of the best values in town at $25 per person, that cost can still be difficult for some families. When you have multiple children, those expenses can add up quickly.
As a parent and grandparent, that got me thinking.
Summer memories are often made at places like the city pool. Learning to swim, spending time with friends, cooling off on a hot day, and simply being a kid are experiences many of us take for granted. Unfortunately, not every family is in the same financial situation.
After hearing from several community members who expressed interest in helping, I reached out to Tiffin Parks and Recreation Director Bryce Kuhn to see if there is currently a program in place that helps families who may struggle to afford pool passes.
If a program already exists, I'd love to help promote it. If one does not exist, I would like to work with Parks and Recreation, local businesses, and community members to explore the possibility of creating one. It's about kids. It's about making sure every child has the opportunity to enjoy summer regardless of their family's financial situation.
I've already had people tell me they would be willing to donate. That says a lot about our community. Sometimes the best ideas come from neighbors helping neighbors.
As soon as I hear back from Bryce, I'll share what I learn.
If you would support a community-sponsored pool pass program, let me know in the comments.

I WANT YOUR OPINION.

I keep hearing people say there’s nothing for kids to do in Tiffin, but I honestly don’t think that’s true.
For kids ages 5-17, Tiffin offers a lot more than people give it credit for. Hedges-Boyer Park alone has one of the nicest playgrounds in Northwest Ohio, a municipal swimming pool with a slide and diving boards, basketball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, disc golf, walking and biking trails, baseball and softball fields, football fields, and plenty of open space to just be a kid.
The Tiffin-Seneca Public Library offers programs for kids and teens throughout the year including LEGO activities, summer reading programs, story times, contests, art activities, and special events.
Tiffin Parks and Recreation also runs youth sports, summer camps, special events, and activities throughout the year. The city maintains 18 parks covering roughly 200 acres with playgrounds, trails, sports facilities, and recreational opportunities spread throughout town.
Add in Little League baseball and softball, youth football, soccer programs, YMCA activities, school sports, East Green concerts, community festivals, Fourth of July events, fishing, biking, skateboarding, and just getting outside with friends, and there are plenty of opportunities available.
Could we use even more things for teenagers? Absolutely. Every community can improve. But saying there is nothing for kids to do in Tiffin simply isn't accurate. The opportunities are there for families who want to get involved.
The bigger question may be whether we are encouraging kids to take advantage of what already exists.

JVIS Hiring Event Coming to Tiffin and Bowling Green
There’s some positive news for Northwest Ohio job seekers.
JVIS, the automotive manufacturing company that recently acquired the former Toledo Molding & Die (TMD) operations in Tiffin and Bowling Green, is hosting onsite job fairs next week and is actively hiring for multiple positions and all shifts.
The acquisition helped preserve hundreds of manufacturing jobs that were at risk following First Brands Group's bankruptcy and provides long-term stability for two major employers in our region. For many local families, this represented more than just a business transaction. It provided hope and continuity for workers who have spent years building their careers at these facilities.
JVIS is a global automotive supplier that designs and manufactures interior systems, molded plastic components, lighting, electrical systems, and other automotive technologies for major vehicle manufacturers. The company has stated that its focus in Ohio is maintaining operations, supporting customers, assisting employees through the transition, and building long-term manufacturing stability at both facilities.
Now, JVIS is looking to grow its workforce and bring additional opportunities to Northwest Ohio.
JVIS is currently hiring for Operators, Maintenance Technicians, and Process Technicians on all shifts.
Whether you're looking for a new career opportunity, returning to manufacturing, or simply want to learn more about the company, this is a chance to meet the team, ask questions, and explore available positions.

Remember Brookhaven Family Fun Center?
What was once one of Tiffin’s most popular family entertainment spots may eventually become something completely different.
The former Brookhaven Family Fun Center property on Tiffin’s west side — once home to go-karts, putt-putt golf, batting cages, and a driving range — was purchased in June of 2024 by Radhe Krsna LLC for approximately $300,000 according to property records.
What makes the purchase interesting is the apparent connection between Radhe Krsna LLC and KRSNA Hospitality LLC, the ownership group associated with the Hampton Inn in Tiffin located on State Route 231. Public financing records tied KRSNA Hospitality LLC to the Hampton Inn acquisition several years ago, with Hemali Patel identified in financing documents as part of the ownership group.
The same Cambridge, Ohio address connected to Radhe Krsna LLC is also associated with KRSNA Hospitality LLC, raising questions about what could eventually be developed on the now abandoned 14-acre property.
At this time, there are no publicly announced redevelopment plans for the property. However, because of its commercial zoning, size, visibility, and location near US-224 and Tiffin’s growing west side commercial corridor, the land could potentially be attractive for future hospitality, hotel, restaurant, retail, or mixed-use development.
Today, much of Brookhaven sits hidden beneath trees and weeds nearly beyond recognition.
For many people who grew up in Tiffin, Brookhaven was the place to go during the summer. The property featured go-karts, miniature golf, batting cages, and a driving range long before larger entertainment chains became common in the area.
Now, nature has slowly reclaimed much of the property. The old mini golf paths are overgrown. The former cart track is cracked and fading. Looking at the aerial image today, it is hard to imagine how much activity once filled the property.
While the future of the land remains unknown, one thing is certain — Brookhaven still brings back a lot of memories for people across Tiffin.
Do you remember going to Brookhaven Family Fun Center? What was your favorite part?

Most people never get to see this world from above the ground.
Four professional tree climbers trained inside a massive sycamore tree at Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin as they prepared for the 2026 North American Tree Climbing Championship in Kent, Ohio.
This video breaks down each station in the tree as the climber navigates ropes, limb walks, positioning systems, and movement challenges high above the ground.
Competitive tree climbing takes an incredible amount of skill, precision, safety training, and athletic ability.
