What should you use to remove burrs from a dog’s coat?

Lincoln finished our Northern Virginia hike looking like a Giant Schnauzer-shaped piece of Velcro. Burrs were tangled throughout his coat, and I needed a way to remove them without pulling his hair or making the process miserable for him.

We stopped at Tilly’s Pet Supplies in Middleburg, Virginia, and came home with a Bamboo Groom rotating-pin comb and Skout’s Honor probiotic detangler. We also picked up Saint Rocco’s beef and pumpkin treats to help keep Lincoln cooperative during the grooming ordeal.

Then Lincoln came home with GivePet freeze-dried beef-liver treats and food samples from Open Farm, Zignature and Annamaet.

This was supposed to be a simple dog-friendly hike. It became a full post-hike grooming haul, and somehow Lincoln was the one who came out ahead.

Have you ever walked into a pet store with a problem and received genuinely amazing help?

We found Tilly’s Pet Supplies after a beautiful hike turned into a Giant Schnauzer grooming emergency. Lincoln came off the trail covered in burrs, and I had no idea how to remove them without pulling his coat or hurting him.

The woman working at Tilly’s was amazing. She listened to what happened, helped me choose the right comb and detangler, and even found beef and pumpkin dog treats to keep Lincoln occupied while I worked through the burrs. She also sent him home with a few extra treats because apparently being a walking shrub deserves compensation.

Beyond rescuing us from our post-hike disaster, Tilly’s is one of the cutest pet stores in Middleburg. They have dog food, treats, grooming supplies, everyday pet essentials, and so many fun seasonal options.

Giant Schnauzer owners, tell me: does yours also behave like they have absolutely ironclad job Security?

Because I’m pretty sure Lincoln has figured out that his job security is excellent. 😂

Living with a Giant Schnauzer means living with a dog who is smart, confident, opinionated, curious, stubborn, ridiculously funny, and somehow always aware of exactly what is happening in the house.

They are a working breed, so life with a Giant Schnauzer can involve a LOT more than walks around the neighborhood. Lincoln wants training. He wants activities. He wants adventures. He wants to investigate everything. He wants to know what I’m doing, where I’m going, and whether any of it involves him.

And apparently he also wants the freedom to make some questionable personal choices because he knows his mother is completely obsessed with him.

If you’re researching Giant Schnauzers because you’re thinking about getting one, please understand that the personality is a BIG part of the package. 😂

Looking for a place to walk your dog in Centreville, Virginia that isn’t just a dog park? 🐾

Rock Hill District Park in Centreville, VA is worth knowing about, especially if the off-leash dog park is too crowded or dog parks just aren’t your dog’s thing.

The park is much bigger than the fenced dog park area. Rock Hill District Park covers about 169 acres, with open fields, wooded areas, a pond, and informal walking paths where you can explore with your dog on leash.

For Lincoln, this was the kind of outing that turns a regular walk into a full sensory adventure.

There’s tall grass, tons of new smells, open space, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and let your dog sniff instead of worrying about covering a certain distance.

If you have a working breed, high-energy dog, or a dog that simply loves using their nose, this kind of sniff walk can be a great alternative to standing inside a crowded dog park.

A few things I’d know before exploring Rock Hill District Park with your dog:

🐾 The walking routes are not all polished or clearly marked hiking trails. Some are informal paths through the fields.

🐾 Wear decent shoes, especially if you plan to walk through the taller grass.

🐾 Keep your dog leashed outside the designated off-leash dog park.

🐾 Tall grass also means I’d do a thorough tick check on both you and your dog afterward.

🐾 If the fenced Rock Hill Dog Park looks too crowded when you arrive, you don’t necessarily have to leave. Grab the leash and explore the larger park instead.

If you’re searching for dog-friendly parks in Centreville, Virginia, places to walk your dog in Fairfax County, dog-friendly trails in Northern Virginia, or things to do with your dog in NOVA, Rock Hill District Park gives you another option beyond the traditional dog park.

Looking for a good dog park in Centreville, Virginia? 🐕

We took Lincoln to Rock Hill Off-Leash Dog Park in Centreville, VA, and if you’re considering bringing your dog here, there are a few things I’d want to know before making the trip.

First: bring your own water. There isn’t water available inside the dog park, so you’ll definitely want to pack enough for your dog, especially if you’re visiting on a warm day or planning to stay awhile.

Rock Hill has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, with the small-dog side designated for dogs under 25 pounds. The large-dog area gave Lincoln plenty of space to wander, sniff, explore, and do what he apparently considered a complete property inspection.

Another thing to consider is timing. Rock Hill Dog Park can get busy during the popular after-work hours, so if your dog is more comfortable with extra space or fewer dogs around, you may want to try visiting outside that peak window.

We happened to hit the jackpot during our visit and had the entire large-dog area to ourselves. Lincoln took full advantage by sniffing every corner and marking the park like he’d just received the deed.

If you’re searching for dog parks in Centreville, Fairfax County, or Northern Virginia, Rock Hill is definitely one to put on your list, particularly if you have a larger dog that needs room to move.

One of my favorite things about having a Giant Schnauzer is that Lincoln is completely committed to whatever we’re doing. Hiking, swimming, scent work, FAST CAT, riding in the boat… his general philosophy seems to be: “I’m in. What are we doing?”

POV: you thought you were the coolest one on the river until this guy pulled up. 😎🐾

Lincoln didn’t just arrive on the Potomac—he made an entrance. The dinghy? His transportation. The Rex Specs? His signature look. The Giant Schnauzer attitude? Completely non-negotiable.

And yes, those are his Rex Specs Dog Goggles This isn’t sponsored, I just love how ridiculously cool he looks in them. 😂

We spend a lot of time outdoors with Lincoln, so I’m always interested in practical dog adventure gear, especially things that work for a large, active working breed.
