Three people have drowned in Beaufort County waters over a week, prompting warnings from local law enforcement and beach officials during the busy summer season.

Beachgoers are urged to check local surf conditions, follow posted signage and flag systems, swim only in designated areas, and avoid entering the water alone or during rough surf conditions. Rip currents remain one of the most dangerous and often underestimated threats to swimmers, even those who are well experienced.

It was standing room only in Sheriff P.J. Tanner’s training room on Bay Street during a community meeting held on July 8, 2025. Sheriff Tanner opened the meeting by announcing that the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has applied to participate in ICE’s 287(g) program, a federal initiative under the Immigration and Nationality Act that delegates immigration enforcement authority to local law enforcement agencies.

Beyond the financials, the fact remains that the contractual agreement itself is illegitimate, which has been confirmed under the SCAG’s opinion. It is disturbing that the City continues to remain silent and has yet to acknowledge these concerns. Will the city at least reach out to the SCAG’s office for clarity on their new opinion? City Officials have yet to provide an answer, nor have they addressed potential alternative solutions, such as creating an independent, city-run parking enforcement division. If Beaufort is forced to take over parking enforcement, does the city (or the Beaufort Police Department) have the resources to do so?
