On Pat Conroy’s 80th birthday, Sunday, October 26, at 3:00-5:00 p.m., OR on Monday, October 27, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. join Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt at Village Social of Habersham for an engaging exploration of Pat Conroy’s lifelong relationship with poetry as a reader, as a self-described “failed poet,” and as a writer who found a creative outlet for his Great Love of poetry in his lyrical and descriptive prose. Through discussion of Pat’s teachers, mentors, and favorite poets, and through published and unpublished writings spanning the breadth of his life, this presentation fosters a new appreciation for Conroy’s admiration of poetry, his dedication to the writing craft, and the myriad ways in which poetry shines through his storied prose.

The Tenth Annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival will conclude with a noon luncheon on Sunday, October 26, what would have been Pat Conroy’s 80th birthday, featuring the much-anticipated appearance in Beaufort of novelist, playwright, screenwriter, comic, and filmmaker Adriana Trigiani.

Like Conroy, Trigiani arrived as a stranger in a small Southern town where she unexpectedly discovered her soul’s work. And, like Conroy, she became one of the country’s most beloved novelists and storytellers. With millions of readers around the world, Adriana Trigiani is a filmmaker, entertainer and the New York Times bestselling author of twenty books in both fiction and nonfiction. The New York Times has called her “a comedy writer with a heart of gold,” and described her books as “tiramisu for the soul.”

Luke Frazier writes:

The phrase “tunnel vision” tends to run in a pejorative direction, suggesting a narrow view and the possibility of missing out on something. It exists in a similar sense with the phrase “operating in silos,” where an organization or group allegedly lacks healthy cooperation and sharing of historical knowledge. But there is a tunnel in our midst here in Beaufort where the vision is instead abundantly broad and knowledge is cooperatively woven among all. It is an uninterrupted explosion of spray-painted color and seamless visual inclusion. And if you visit the Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL) campus, you can walk through this tunnel any time you want.
