Sea pork is the common name for this type of tunicate. Tunicates are animals in the phylum Chordata, which humans are also in! Even though they’re in the phylum chordata (subphylum Urochordata), they are still invertebrates.

Tunicates have the characteristic features needed to classify as chordates, including a notochord, but only during their free swimming larval phase. Once they become adults, they lose many of those chordate characteristics and are typically immobile filter feeders.

I’ll never forget my marine invert professor standing in front of the class waving his arm up and down and dropping his voice a few octaves saying “hey baby” as he mimicked a fiddler crab trying to attract a mate 🦀
