BREAKING: Tom Flanagan, the former owner of Beaumont’s historic Gilbert Building that was destroyed by suspected arson in 2024, has been federally indicted on multiple counts of alleged finance crimes. The sealed indictments come nearly two years after a multi-agency raid on his downtown office, while state authorities continue to investigate his alleged role in orchestrating the Gilbert Building fire and a string of related arsons across the city. Sunday morning, Aug. 2, Beaumont police responded to a large sinkhole caused by what officials believe was a water main break. Officers found a black Ford F-150 partially submerged in the sinkhole that was rapidly filling with water.

Crews from the Beaumont Fire Department, Streets Department, Water Utilities Department, Emergency Operations Center, and Spanky’s Towing responded to secure the area, assist with the incident and begin repairs.

Tuesday, Aug. 4, a Modern Concrete and Materials mixer truck became stuck in the 5200 block of Fifth Street after the roadway gave way beneath the vehicle. As of press time, there was no estimated timeline for repairs and city engineers are determining the cause of the road failure, according to Jennifer Robertson, communications and marketing manager for the city of Port Arthur.

Javonta Turner, charged with capital murder in the September 2024 shooting death of Ebonie Gilbert on Bennett Road in Beaumont, reached a plea agreement on a lessor charge of murder Monday, Aug. 3, and was sentenced to 50 years by Criminal Court District Judge John Stevens.

Turner additionally received a 50-year sentence for aggravated robbery for a prior offense that he was serving deferred adjudicated probation for at the time of Gilbert's murder.

The two sentences will run concurrently. Turner will have to serve at least half of the 50-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

July 30, Beaumont Police Department (BPD) Special Services Division, Special Assignment Unit, K-9 Unit, Southeast Texas Violent Crime Task Force, and FBI executed a search warrant at a home in the 6300 block of Westgate, where they reportedly recovered a large quantity of suspected fentanyl, suspected methamphetamine, suspected ma*****na, and an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency.

BPD officers observed 47-year-old Kadrian Cormier leaving the residence as they prepared to serve the warrant. Detectives subsequently conducted a traffic stop and discovered narcotics in Cormier's possession, according to BPD.

Cormier was arrested and transported to Jefferson County Correctional Facility, where he was booked on narcotics-related charges. Authorities said additional federal charges are pending as the investigation remains ongoing.

July 23, a Jefferson County jury in Judge Raquel West’s 252nd District Court found Joseph Charles Freeman guilty of murder and sentenced the defendant to 60 years in prison, on top of a 60-year sentence Freeman is already serving.

According to Beaumont Police Department detectives investigating the murder case, Freeman, 18 at the time of the murder, was involved in the shooting death of Richard Shillow on March 27, 2022. Freeman was also wanted at the same time for aggravated robbery.

Beaumont police are investigating a burglary after thieves stole a large amount of merchandise, including gaming consoles, from a local GameStop early July 28.

According to the preliminary investigation, a large quantity of merchandise, including gaming consoles, was stolen during the burglary. Surveillance video showed two masked men enter the business, steal the merchandise and flee the scene.

The Southeast Texas Violent Crime Task Force arrested 20-year-old Nathan Vanduren and 21-year-old Levi Nash, July 28, following a vehicle pursuit in Beaumont that ended with the seizure of multiple fi****ms, suspected narcotics and cash.

Vanduren was wanted on multiple felony charges and fled when officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, leading officers on a brief pursuit before he and Nash abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Both men were quickly taken into custody.

Detectives discovered Vanduren was in possession of a significant quantity of suspected illegal narcotics. Both men were booked on felony charges, including possession of controlled substances, evading and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
