We had a blast this past weekend in Tennessee on Central Hill Lake with some of our Jackson Kayak friends. We laughed a lot, caught a few fish, and it felt great to be out on the water in the warm Tennessee sunshine.

I don't mind being the camera guy when the lake's got that early spring beaver barf churning around. Some people love it, but I'm one of those who cringes a bit. All you can do is get it on the bank and try to land close to one. But hey, the sun was out, the air was warm, and it was awesome to catch that first bass of 2026.

Is there anything that gets the blood flowing better than that February "fake spring?" It hits the fishing community like clockwork every year, and suddenly everyone is ready to be on the water.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m a bit behind the curve this season. My tackle situation is currently a "work in progress," to put it kindly. This is actually my first real sit-down to pick through and restock, and I’m caught in that classic internal struggle: the urge to scale back versus the nagging voice saying, "I might need that."

Thankfully, kayak fishing has evolved way beyond our old DIY milk crate days. With all the modern accessories, we can utilize small spaces and distribute weight so much more efficiently—which is a lifesaver, because those soft plastics add up in weight much faster than you’d think. Being able to turn dead space into smart storage is amazing.

Since I’m currently in tackle mode, I’m curious: What’s one new piece of tackle you’ve added to your kit to experiment with this year?

Is using AI to generate a business's content really the future? Scary thought, as it will only continue to improve from where it is today. There are already some individuals who cannot tell the difference between what is factual or fictional. Isn't advertising with AI images considered false advertising? Will false images affect a business's/individual's credibility?

We are really at an important place in all this where establishing realism and genuine storytelling is going to be huge. There's already a big shift in motion of people looking for something that's real, and I personally believe that will continue to gain strength. Nobody likes being lied to.

AI can be a good tool to help with brainstorming, rewriting/spell-checking, and researching items. But to use it to create everything, as some are doing, feels like a big miss. What are your thoughts? Are you going to buy from companies that are selling products using cartoons to talk about products?

If you get creative with self-filming or creating, it'll totally add to your step count. You'll see my phone in my hand, which is hooked up to my camera as a remote. I can tweak my manual camera settings, the autofocus tracking, set a timer, and, of course, hit the shutter button all through my phone. You can do so much with a tripod and today's gear; you just need the drive and imagination to go for it. Sure, some people might give you a funny look, but I bet every single one of them has taken a selfie by now, and that's pretty much the same thing. Do your thing and have fun.

Sometimes you get a product that's really worth the money. These sleeves from Evolv have been exactly that. From going from kayak to truck or floating when I messed up on the river. Zero failure in the stitching or quality after 3 years now, and that says a lot since most products are made cheap these days. If you're as picky about your gear as I am, you'll be happy.
