Identity hidden, but I promise it’s not from my mom.

I’m sharing because The Bee has picked up a lot of new followers lately, and I suspect there are others with the same question.

A few things for the newly initiated:

Every article I’ve ever posted lives at www.TheBedfordBee.com. There’s a full archive, plus a random button that will shuffle you through articles. Every story also has related articles at the bottom, so you can truly disappear into the entire Bee catalog for hours. Unless you live in Bedford Village, where internet connectivity remains more of an aspiration.

You can also sign up for the mailing list on the website. Every new article will come directly to your inbox, for free. No algorithm required. No wondering whether Instagram decided you needed to see a reel about sourdough instead.

I’m not doing this for money, but I did enable donations after people asked. And people have been ridiculously generous. That money has stayed local. Some has gone toward community sponsorships. Some has gone to Wogies. Both, I believe, are important investments in Bedford’s future.

A few months ago, someone suggested I make a Bedford Bee coffee table book. I initially thought that was hilarious.

I still think it’s hilarious.

So I’m going to look into whether it’s actually feasible. If it is, perhaps I can get something together for the holidays. Because really, who wouldn’t be thrilled to find a Bedford Bee coffee table book under their Shine Bright tree this December?

Thank you for reading, sharing, and sending tips.

🇺🇸 Town Board Celebrates Veterans By Charging Them for Banners

This fall, Bedford is honoring local veterans the best way it knows how: by having them underwrite their own public gratitude.

As part of the new “Tribute Banner” program, the Town Board is thrilled to display banners along Route 117 featuring the brave men and women who served - provided they (or their families) cover the costs.

Residents are encouraged to admire the banners and reflect on the sacrifices made. Especially the $250 fee, which some veterans are now adding to their list of service-related injuries.

“Freedom isn’t free,” said one councilmember. “And neither is a vinyl banner here in Bedford.”

So join the Bedford Veterans Committee this Saturday at 10 a.m. for a walk along the banner route. Expect a peaceful morning of remembrance, followed by intense tactical maneuvering as politicians on the ballot this November attempt to secure favorable positions near anyone holding a camera.

🏆 Fox Lane Students Compete in Bedford’s Bumpiest New Sport: The Route 172 Hydrolympics

Lunch runs have gotten splashy at Fox Lane, where students are turning Bedford’s cratered infrastructure into a competitive sport - fueled by potholes the size of freshmen and suspension systems held together by prayer.

The rules are simple: three passengers, three full cups of water, one violently uneven drive down Route 172 to their favorite lunch spot. Whoever spills the most, pays. The driver? Just the innocent chauffeur - eyes on the road, hands at 10 and 2, soul clinging to the axle.

“My guidance counselor says I need more extracurriculars,” said the driver, junior Wendy Waitlisted. “I think this qualifies as off roading.”

The Town Board finally passed its Route 172 resolution and proudly announced that it had been sent to Albany. Excellent. That concludes the ceremonial portion of road repair. Now tell residents who responded, who ignored it, and how often Bedford is following up. Route 172 has already spent years disappearing into a hole. The resolution shouldn’t do the same.

🚧 Bedford Launches Choose Your Own Lane Program

Motorists puzzled by the growing number of freshly paved Bedford roads with no center lines can relax. It’s apparently not unfinished work – it’s innovation.

The Town is reportedly testing a new “Flexible Lane Initiative.” By eliminating center lines while the pavement is still smooth, Bedford hopes to ease motorists into the free-form driving patterns they’ll need once the potholes return.

The program was inspired by Routes 117 and 172, where Bedford motorists already select their lane using a sophisticated combination of pothole depth, oncoming traffic and faith.

Officials say removing the lines now will also eliminate the unnecessary stigma associated with crossing a double yellow to avoid losing an axle. Instead, motorists are encouraged to view the entire roadway as a shared pool of potentially usable asphalt.

“We’re moving away from the outdated idea that there are only two lanes,” explained one fictional transportation consultant. “Drivers deserve equitable access to whatever pavement remains.”

Early feedback has been positive, particularly among longtime Bedford residents who were surprised to learn that Route 172 had lanes in the first place.

The orange construction signs will remain for now, although officials expect them to become considerably less noticeable once Bedford returns to its traditional roadside signage program, reminding motorists every 150 feet that gas powered leaf blowers will not be tolerated.

Potholes, apparently, remain unrestricted.

Safe swerving, Bedford.

🏋️ No Pain. No Gain. No New Business.

Last Tuesday, the Bedford Town Board returned from its reduced summer schedule. And judging by the three hour block they placed on the public calendar - I assumed they were rested, recharged and ready to work up a sweat.

But our Town Board had other ideas. And shame on our local paper for opening its coverage of the September 22 meeting by saying: “At little more than half an hour, Tuesday’s Town Board meeting was one of the quickest of the year.”

What they failed to mention however, was that we were witnessing the exciting debut of Bedford’s 30 Minute Municipal Government Workout.

Because why spend three hours discussing new ideas, tackling ongoing problems and charting a direction for Bedford when you can get all the motions of municipal leadership in just 30 minutes?

Bedford’s revolutionary new program eliminates the strenuous parts of local government and focuses exclusively on the movements that matter:

APPROVE two new dump trucks!

REPLACE one police vehicle!

TRANSITION the Town Historian, eventually!

RELAUNCH the Town Flag Redesign Committee, which had apparently “lost its steam”!

That’s it! No heavy policy lifting. No exhausting discussion of new opportunities. No uncomfortable stretching beyond the agenda. Just approve, replace, transition and relaunch your way to a leaner, more procedural government.

The 30 Minute Municipal Government Workout.

All the motions of governing. Without all that governing.

For best results, experts recommend repeating the workout twice a month.

Except during summer.

📣 BREAKING: Leaf Threat Level Raised to 'Crimson' - Town Board Scrambles Electronic Road Sign into Position

As the first rebellious leaf dared to fall in Bedford this week, the Town Board sprang into action - a rare feat, reportedly interrupting a mid-morning nap and three separate consultant briefings. They swiftly commandeered the Bedford Police Department’s prized electronic roadway sign and parked it squarely on Bedford Road. Passersby are now greeted with a strobe-like warning: “LEAF BLOWER BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.”

“When I saw the giant flashing sign, I figured it had to be about road paving finally starting,” said a passerby from the Mavis Tire waiting room, watching her tire get patched for the second time this month. “But nope - just the Town Board reminding me that my landscaping choices are morally indefensible.”

The move comes as part of the Board’s annual autumn ritual, in which environmental virtue is projected at retina-searing brightness while actual town issues remain dimly lit in the rearview mirror. Officials say the ban lifts by November - right around the time your yard becomes an ankle-deep blanket of despair no machine can move.

“I’m not trying to melt the polar ice caps,” said Bedford resident Donnie Tumbleson. “I’m just trying to get the leaves off my porch before my mother-in-law falls.”

No updates yet on road repaving or hamlet revitalization. But rest assured, the war on leaves continues. Relentlessly. Blindingly. Bureaucratically.

🏆 Let The Hamlet Games Begin

This Saturday is the annual Town of Bedford Tri-Festa, featuring everything you’ve come to expect: food trucks, inflatables, live music, and fifteen Bedford 2030 volunteers standing between you and the garbage cans demanding you explain where you think that napkin belongs.

But this year there’s something new - the first annual Tri-Hamlet Games.

Bedford Hills, Katonah, and Bedford Village will compete for hamlet supremacy - despite the Town having made its preference fairly clear.

And I for one love this idea. Our amazing Rec & Parks Department is always raising the bar for residents, and this year’s events prove once again just how well they know their audience:

🏆 THE ROADSIDE SURVIVAL CHALLENGE where teams race to change all four tires on a series of vehicles towed in from Route 172 that morning. Bonus points for explaining that noise coming from the suspension.

🏆 THE ONE BAR CHALLENGE in which competitors attempt to stream one complete song on Spotify from inside Bedford Village Memorial Park. Time will be capped at 90 minutes.

🏆 THE NET ZERO LEAF BLOW where contestants must move a pile of damp leaves from one side of the pavilion to the other using a fully charged electric leaf blower. Time will be capped at 27 minutes or whenever the battery dies, whichever comes first.

🏆 THE BEDFORD MAKE IT FIT CHALLENGE in which teams are given a giant map of Bedford with room for 150 development pieces. Then they’re handed 300. First team to convince everyone they fit, wins.

Three hamlets (two still think they have a chance).

One cup (please see a Bedford 2030 volunteer before attempting disposal).

63,119 photos of it on Instagram by Monday morning.

🍔 Shake Shack Opens, Bedford Responds

With the long awaited opening of Shake Shack in Mount Kisco today, Bedford officials are reminding residents that burgers and fries may be brought back into town, but all disposable packaging must be surrendered before crossing the Bedford border.

A temporary Takeout Amnesty Zone has been established at the town line, where residents may safely dispose of Shake Shack bags, burger wrappers, fry containers, napkins and other environmentally suspicious materials without penalty.

Drivers should expect brief delays while vehicles are inspected for undeclared packaging.

Residents are encouraged to transfer their meals into approved reusable containers before returning to Bedford. Those who arrive unprepared may transport their burgers home using beeswax wrap, reusable produce bags or cupped hands.

Milkshakes will be allowed to cross the border pending a $75,000 study on sustainable beverage agitation.

Officials stressed that nobody is trying to prevent residents from enjoying Shake Shack.

“We just want to make sure they’re doing it responsibly.”

The checkpoint is expected to cause minimal additional disruption, as motorists already slow to 4 mph at that location to avoid a pothole.

🎄 The Important Work Continues

In her Friday newsletter, the Town Supervisor listed all the actions the Town Board took at its meeting last Tuesday evening.

Just below the paragraph that - for some reason referred to “The Board” as “The Borad” - was something that positively glowed.

Among the actions it celebrated was approval of a December 4th event called the “Shine Bright Tree and Menorah Lighting.”

Because nothing says holiday tradition quite like giving the tree a name that sounds like it survived six rounds of sensitivity review.

But once the tree gets a new name, you’ve got a bigger problem. Suddenly, generations of beloved holiday music are out of compliance.

So I’ve taken it upon myself to update some of the classics ahead of Shine Bright season:

🎵 It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like December
🎵 Have Yourself a Merry Little Winter
🎵 I’ll Be Home for the December Holiday
🎵 We Wish You a Merry Year End
🎵 Baby, It’s Seasonally Appropriate Outside
🎵 I Saw Mommy Kissing a Festive Gift Distribution Professional
🎵 I’m Dreaming of a Precipitation Based December 25th
🎵 Grandma Got Run Over by a Holiday Transportation Animal

The complete album will be available soon on www.TheBedfordBee.com, assuming I can find an audio engineer who doesn’t cut the power to the studio the moment I start belting out my rendition of “Frosty the Non-Denominational Snowperson.”

About Last Friday

I wasn’t planning to belabor what happened at Bedford Town Hall last Friday, but after hearing from so many of you over the weekend, I felt an update was necessary - particularly since the Town’s elected leadership did not provide one.

Shortly after my post, the flag was lowered. I subsequently received an explanation from Town Hall, which I’ve shared in the accompanying graphic.

Personally, I didn’t like the explanation. I still don’t. But I appreciated receiving it. I appreciated the apology. And I appreciated learning that steps had been taken to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I think others would have appreciated hearing that too. Which is why I was surprised and disappointed when the Supervisor’s newsletter went out later that evening, discussed September 11, but did not address any of this.

September 11 gave us extraordinary examples of public service, people who understood that others were counting on them and accepted that responsibility. Thankfully, public service rarely asks anything so extraordinary. Most days, it simply asks those entrusted with our institutions to be present, accountable and willing to take responsibility when something goes wrong.

Town staff did that privately. What was missing was elected leadership doing it publicly.

All weekend, I received messages from people asking whether the flag had been lowered, how something like this had happened, and whether anything had been done to make sure it wouldn’t happen again.

Those were reasonable questions, and Town Hall had reasonable answers.

What happened Friday, followed by a beautiful September 11 ceremony I attended in Mount Kisco later that evening, left me reflecting much more deeply on what “Never Forget” means 25 years later.

I ended up writing about it. It’s too long for a social media post, but for anyone interested, I put the essay here:
