Uncovering Colonial Burial Traditions: A Rural Cemetery Tour in Belchertown, MA

Join local historian Bob as he guides us through a rural cemetery founded in 1769 with one of the rarest features in early American burial history: a confirmed first burial. This tour explores the evolution of burial practices before and after the American Revolution, changes brought on by the Cemetery Beautification Movement, and how religious beliefs shaped everything from gravestone orientation to footstone placement. With stories of Baptists fleeing Northampton, veterans of multiple wars, and sections for paupers, infants, and possible suicides, this is more than a cemetery — it’s a window into early New England life, death, and belief.

BCTV Athletics Spotlight: Morghan Litz

Belchertown High School senior Morghan Litz has built an impressive career on the soccer field while making an impact far beyond it.

A four-year varsity player and senior captain, Morghan has earned All-Western Mass honors multiple times, All-State recognition, and Super Seven honors. She leads her team in both goals and assists and has committed to Franklin Pierce University, where she will continue her soccer career at the Division II level while studying sports management.

Morghan’s leadership doesn’t stop when the game ends. An honor roll student, she also gives back to the next generation of players by refereeing first- and second-grade games and serving as an assistant coach for a girls first- and second-grade soccer team.

Her nomination describes her as a “work horse who leaves it all out on the field” and a leader both on and off the field.

Congratulations to Morghan Litz, our latest BCTV Athletics Spotlight athlete.

BCTV is looking for athletes from across the Belchertown community to feature in our Athletics Spotlight series — and we need your nominations.

We’re looking for more than just stats and big wins. Nominate an athlete who stands out through leadership, improvement, hard work, sportsmanship, perseverance, community involvement, or a great story worth sharing.

Athletes can come from school teams, youth and recreational programs, club sports, college athletics, and community sports. Parents, coaches, teachers, teammates, community members — and athletes themselves — can submit a nomination.

Belchertown Police vs. Fire | 4th Annual Battle of the Badges Softball Game

Belchertown police officers and firefighters face off in the fourth annual Battle of the Badges softball game at Chestnut Hill Community School.

Belchertown Fire Rescue Welcomes Firefighter Jacob Haley

Belchertown Fire Rescue welcomes its newest firefighter, Jacob Haley, during an official swearing-in ceremony at the fire station.

Haley brings 10 years of firefighting experience to Belchertown, including eight years as a full-time firefighter and two years as a call firefighter in Monson. Following the oath of office and badge pinning, Haley thanked those in attendance and said he is looking forward to becoming part of the department and the Belchertown community.

With Haley joining the department, Belchertown Fire Rescue is now fully staffed.

This program at the Clapp Memorial Library, led by the Gravestone Girls, explores local cemeteries through engaging stories and expert insights, highlighting how gravestones, burial practices, and cemetery landscapes evolved from the colonial era to today. The program celebrates cemeteries not only as sites of remembrance, but also as vibrant public spaces for education, community events, and personal reflection.

Belchertown Cultural Council Celebrates Grant Recipients & Opens 2027 Grant Cycle

The Belchertown Cultural Council celebrates its 2026 grant recipients during a reception at Arcpoint Brewery and shares information about the upcoming 2027 grant cycle.

Council members discuss the wide variety of projects supported through Cultural Council grants, including music and community events, student programs, arts and educational activities, library programs, and hands-on experiences for residents of all ages.

Applications for the 2027 grant cycle open September 1 and close October 15. Grants can support projects of many different sizes, and local artists, educators, musicians, organizations, and community members are encouraged to apply.

The Council also discusses upcoming community programs, including Food Truck Fridays, Winter Light Night, and plans to bring back Art Week, along with opportunities to volunteer with the Cultural Council.

Inside Belchertown Recreation: Programs for All Ages

Belchertown Community Television visits the Belchertown Recreation Department Open House to learn about the wide range of programs available to residents.

Instructors and program leaders highlight upcoming opportunities including yoga and step cardio, swim lessons and aquatic programs, youth wrestling, cheerleading, Wild Nature Adventure Camp, LEGO-based STEM programs, and Music for Littles. The conversation also includes information about the Town Beach, the pool, upcoming fall programs, and activities planned throughout the year.

Whether you’re looking for fitness programs, youth sports, swimming, nature activities, music, or something new for the kids, Belchertown Recreation has plenty of ways to get involved.
