One of the more conspicuous signs of late summer into fall are the large flocks of red-winged blackbirds wheeling around area marshes and croplands. If you haven’t noticed them yet, you should soon.

The CPB-supported series Family Pictures USA, which was broadcast to more than 5 million viewers on PBS in 2019, used family photo albums to help ordinary Americans discover their hidden family histories and how their families helped shape local and regional history.

Working with Detroit PBS WGCU Public Media and PBS North Carolina, host Thomas Allen Harris visited Detroit, Southwest Florida and North Carolina, starting with old family photos and uncovering little known and unusual personal stories that connect each family to a larger local or regional narrative.

The Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling continues to work with partners on local photo sharing events that engage communities. https://familypicturesinstitute.org/
