My Rode NTK has been a faithful if somewhat "plain spoken" audio servant for quite a few years. After reading numerous articles about how the sound of that mic could be seriously enhanced by replacing the capsule and and tube, I decided to go for it. When the parts arrived in the mail I quickly determined that I was in over my head and prevailed on Lincoln Clapp to do the mod for me. I'm very happy to report that I'm very happy! The NTK is now my first-call voiceover mic, and I expect it to see a lot of service on vocal sessions of all sorts.

My new baby — a WA-14 from Warm Audio. Check out the shootout between this mic and an AKG-414 (which costs twice as much). If you watch the upper-right corner of the video you'll see a very discreet display of which mic you're listening to at any given moment. It doesn't hurt that the singer is so great!

Victoria Canal - Drama (Live on a Wurly)

This link came to me through the regular newsletter I get from American Songwriter magazine. So much music is so over-produced these days that I was really taken with the stripped down arrangement of this tune. I'd never heard of Victoria or seen her perform, so I was totally unprepared for the moment she started interacting with the audience at 2:26. OMG.

Lately I've found myself involved in more spoken word projects (audiobooks, etc). To facilitate that work, I dusted off my carpenter's apron and built a new free-standing isolation booth. It's not soundproof, but it does take "quiet" up several notches. Many thanks to Paul Hodgson, who offered lots of useful input in the design phase.

I have an interesting mix of things going on these days: I just finished working on a hard rock EP (eventually to become an album) with Tune Squad, I'm in the middle of a bluegrass album with Miners Creek, I'm working regularly with David Dodson on a comedic country album, I'm just about to begin a solo classical guitar project with Lance Olivieri, and in June I'll be working on a vocal piece with Frederica Chapman and Theater For The Earth. Variety is the spice!

Freight Liner Blues

There was a time in my life (quite a while back) when I thought I could make some money songwriting. I gravitated toward mainstream country because it seemed like that genre was most receptive to material from outside writers. Long-story-short, I concluded that I probably could do it but it would be a hell of a lot of work and was unlikely to lead to the kind of life I saw myself living.

Fast forward to this morning. I was poking around on YouTube looking for something else and stumbled on this: one of three songs (that I'm aware of, anyhow) that I wrote that got played by anyone else but me. Paul Hotchkiss (credited as a co-writer) was a music publisher who made some lyric suggestions and helped put the demo together, but the song is 95% mine.

In the end, I never saw a nickel of licensing money or royalties. Such is the music biz, I guess. This video was clearly done for some local or regional tv show—the set looks like it came straight out of the 50's!

All-in-all, I thought the band did a pretty decent job with the tune. I bet Hank Williams, Jr. would have knocked it out of the park. 😉

Looking over my studio calendar for the week: Monday morning meeting with my Belfast Center landlord, John McKeith, to arrange a promotional photo shoot; Monday afternoon recording session with Resa & Emily Randolph (of Miners Creek Bluegrass Band); Wednesday morning meeting with a couple of middle school students doing job shadowing; Thursday morning class teaching "recording studio basics" to some folks from the Belfast Senior College; Friday afternoon recording session with singer-songwriter David Dodson. If I'm not careful, this is going to turn into something like a real job. 😉

So here's something fun…

Back in October, I set up a stereo mic in the middle of the audience at David Dodson's annual Camden Opera House variety show extravaganza. The event was to be videotaped, and the idea was to try and improve on the audio quality that he'd been getting from just the video mics in the past.

It turned out that there was quite a bit more to it than just capturing the sound in the room. Among other things, we wound up mixing in a vocal feed that was taken directly from the board and some sampled horns to beef up some of the horn lines. On the whole, I think it turned out pretty well. There will be more videos to follow, but here's a taste…

I've been a huge fan of Mike Senior for years. I first encountered his work in the pages of Sound on Sound, and later in his books "Recording Secrets for the Small Studio" and "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio." Those two references had a transformative effect on nearly every aspect of my own approach to recording and mixing. I'm faster, better and smoother thanks to Mike!
