The low cost and durability helped contribute to the 110,000 sales Willys-Overland enjoyed in 1927, making them third in the United States sale. With the onset of the Great Depression, Willys-Overland focused on a single low-cost car that would become the Willys 77. In early 1931, the Whippet was discontinued.

Unfortunately, this was not the case and the company slipped into receivership in 1932, after just 10,000 examples had been produced. By 1934 they were out of business completely. In 1937 the company was revived and named American Bantam. The company stayed in business until 1941 before production ceased completely.

For 1933, Chrysler would produce just 151 examples of the Imperial, the final year of its production. The CL was carried forward and received only minor changes. A highlight is that one of the nine LeBaron Convertible Roadsters was selected as an official pace car for the Indianapolis 500 that year.
