A temporary restraining order stopping immigration enforcement activity in the Los Angeles area remained in place Monday after a federal appeals court heard arguments but did not rule on the Trump administration's request for a stay of the restraining order.

The appeal stems from a July 2 lawsuit by Southern California residents, workers and advocacy groups who claim the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's aggressive mass-deportation operation that involves "abducting and disappearing" community members via illegal arrest tactics, then detaining people in allegedly unlawful, at times extremely unsanitary conditions while denying detainees legal counsel.

Since June 6, federal agents have carried out aggressive enforcement activity following orders from Trump and administration officials who have pledged to crack down on illegal immigration nationwide.

"Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community," on view from July 31 through Nov. 12, chronicles the central roles Japanese Americans have played in countless car scenes throughout Southern California. Presented by the Japanese American National Museum and curated by cultural scholar and writer Oliver Wang, it will debut at Art Center College of Design’s Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery on South Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena.

A companion book called "Cruising J-Town: Japanese American Car Culture in Los Angeles," authored by Wang and published by Angel City Press at Los Angeles Public Library, will be released on Aug. 5. It traces the history of the Japanese American community alongside the development of the car — from the earliest days of the automobile.

On Tuesday, the Anaheim City Council voted to join a federal lawsuit challenging immigration enforcement tactics as part of a surge operation that began on June 6.

By seeking to join the lawsuit, the city says it "is looking to express the city's concerns about how enforcement is playing out and the impacts it has brought to our residents, neighborhoods and businesses," according to a communication released last week.

"We are standing with our community with this action," Mayor Ashleigh Aitken said. "Indiscriminate and inhumane immigration enforcement has left residents in fear, businesses without customers and our community and economy shaken. Anaheim has met this moment with aid for families, access to legal resources and critical information for our community.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department warned the public Friday about a possibly live gr***de that has gone missing after an explosion last week near Monterey Park that killed three LASD detectives.

Sheriff Robert Luna and Kenny Cooper, special agent in charge of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives' LA office, said anyone who finds what may be the gr***de should not make contact with it and call 911.

Cooper said the investigation into the deadly explosion on July 18 determined one gr***de detonated, and the second explosive was nowhere to be found.

"We conducted a thorough search to locate this second device, but we haven't found it yet," Luna said, referring to multiple searches of the Biscailuz Regional Training Center where the blast occurred. Since the explosion the public has not had access to the facility.

The whereabouts of the second gr***de are unknown.

Through previously untold stories, Wang, a Cal State Long Beach sociology professor, reveals how a community in a state of constant transition and growth used cars as a literal vehicle for their creativity, dreams, and quest for freedom.
