Both boys and girls cross country at McDonald County High School made program history this year, earning twin Big 8 Conference championships.

The McDonald County High School boys and girls cross country teams had never won a conference championship in the program's 19-year history. This year, both boys and girls topped off a strong season by breaking that streak and returning victorious from the Big 8 Conference meet on Oct. 21 in Nevada.

McDonald County was decked out with American flags in the lead-up to Veterans Day, thanks to cadets from the McDonald County JROTC program, who assembled the flags themselves for their Field of Flags fundraiser.

The McDonald County Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet on Oct. 18, recognizing local businesses and citizens with seven awards.

The event provided an environment for attendees to network, and multiple auctions raised money for the chamber's soon-to-open Business Development Center.

This week's newspaper includes our annual Protect & Serve section, featuring civil servants from across the county-- your local firefighters, law enforcement and court employees.

One of those featured is the county's crime victims advocate, a position that Dana Banta is leaving after 21 years. Her place will be filled by Cassandra Haen, who Banta called "a younger me."

PINEVILLE -- Dana Banta of Anderson, outgoing county crime victims advocate, transitioned leadership to Cassandra Haen of Loma Linda, incoming county crime victims advocate, on her retirement day Sept. 19. Banta had served the victims of crime in McDonald County for 21 years.
