Remixxd Eats... The Steel Plate in Monessen!

Is there any food more social than wings? I can remember getting together with buddies 25 years ago at Quaker Steak and L**e every Tuesday for all you can eat wings. The place was lined up out the door. There were entire football teams that would show up. But sadly, things have changed. The Quaker Steaks we used to visit have closed. The price of wings has gone through the roof. What are you supposed to do in 2025 for your wing fix?

Enter The Steel Plate! Known for their wide variety of smoked meats and sandwiches, it turns out that they have a great wing night deal! 25 wings, 2 sauce choices, $25!

I split an order with my two daughters and we picked Sweet BBQ and Hot Honey from their wide variety of sauce choices. Spoiler alert: there were no leftovers!

Dessert was Turtle Cheesecake; please refer to the photos, they were taken approximately 30 seconds apart! πŸ˜†

The Steel Plate is located at 321 Schoonmaker Ave in Monessen, PA. Check their Facebook for daily specials!

Hours are as follows:
Wednesday Closed
Thursday 2–8:30 PM
Friday 11 AM–9 PM

What is Remixxd Eats?

If you saw our brief post on the successful hunt for Nuzzaci's Pizza a few days ago, it has inspired me to start a new feature on local food.

As the owner of a local business, I understand the struggle of getting the word out effectively. We have created a platform here that can really do some good. So we're going to pop in here and there and feature local restaurants, businesses, and I may throw in a picture of what I'm cooking on occasion just for fun. It's going to be positive and authentic. We are FEATURING local spots.

Why am I doing this? Many reasons! Food is a hobby, a passion, my entertainment. Two of my favorite shows are "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" and "Bizarre Foods". My family was in the food industry for nearly 100 years. I love to write. I also love to help people and fellow local businesses. This is not a paid program, it's not for money. If we do something nice, I believe that people will in turn learn about us and what we do!

Any suggestions to check out? Let me know in the comments!

Time for a new Remixxd Eats, as we dine at a place we've gone to for about 30 years, La Eda's in Monessen!

Frankly, I don't even know why I look at the menu when I go to La Eda's. I get the half gnocchi/half ravioli combo every time. Every. Time. But it's a shame, because I'm sure the rest of the menu is great, too! Do you ever do that at a restaurant? Get stuck on one dish forever because you enjoy it so much? Mine is the La Eda's half and half.

That said, someone in our party always orders pizza, and a piece may mysteriously wander onto my plate during the meal. If not, then we're definitely taking some pizza home! Just a heads up, the pizza takes a little longer if you order it, but it is well worth the wait.

La Eda's is one of those local spots that isn't flashy or trendy, but incredibly consistent, enjoyable, and with very friendly service. Now all we need them to do is start taking credit cards! πŸ˜€

Remixxd Eats...McDonald's Chicken Big Mac!

Hours after the fact, I'm still struggling to find the words to accurately describe the Chicken Big Mac (or as someone pointed out, a missed opportunity for the "Big MaChicken").

If you're familiar with Remixxd Eats, you know that the mission is to showcase local restaurants, but on a bigger scale, it's a page that talks about food in all of its various forms. And I was intrigued enough by this sandwich to devote an entire post to act as your guinea pig and try whatever this is supposed to be.

Let's start here: I am not one of those people who thinks McDonald's or fast food in general is beneath me. Is it a good idea to eat it for every meal? Probably not. Is it high cuisine? No! It's not even the best fast food. But much like the mighty Thanos, McDonald's "is inevitable". So here we are, having a Chicken Big Mac.

How do I describe it? I'm not sure. Is it to offer an option for something different on a Big Mac, or is it supposed to compete with legitimate chicken sandwiches? I think it's column A. This is in no stratosphere near competitors like Chick Fil-A or Popeye's. It's a novelty.

Do you like McDonald's Chicken McNuggets? Because that's what they use on this sandwich. Two big, flat, chicken McNuggets. Would you dip Chicken McNuggets in Big Mac sauce? If the answer is "yes", then would probably enjoy this.

I always judge food by a simple question: would I order it again? The answer here is a resounding no. The next time I find myself under the golden arches, I would probably just go for a traditional Big Mac (unless it's McRib season, which is another story).

Next up: Wendy's Krabby Patty Kollab meal! But let me digest today's meal first πŸ˜†

It's been a minute since we've done a Remixxd Eats, so let me fill you in on a hidden (to us) gem located in Mt. Pleasant: Aumer's Sports Bar! Our daughter was recently in the The Geyer Performing Arts Center production of "Fiddler on the Roof", which meant many trips to and from Mt. Pleasant/Scottdale. To be honest, we weren't all that familiar with the area, and wound up crossing a lot of places off our list in a short amount of time.

I was mentioning this to my good friend Matt recently and he gave a very solid endorsement for a place called Aumer's, located near the Everson Drive-In. Long story short, we tried it on Friday and enjoyed it so much that we went back Sunday after our daughter's final show!

I would highly recommend the Pittsburgh Style steak sandwich, quite possibly the juiciest such sandwich I have ever encountered. For my 2nd trip, I had to try the Stuffed Banana Pepper Sausage Burger, which is basically all the ingredients of a stuffed banana pepper on a bun. It had a huge sausage patty, chopped banana peppers, mozzarella, and marinara sauce, with some super crispy fries. We were also thrilled that they had Jioio's of Latrobe pizza on site, which we got to go (and trust me, it's gone). Their frozen chocolate Strawberry drink was refreshing and creative, and for the kids, the spaghetti and chicken tenders were very well received.

I think it's safe to say we will be back to Aumer's sooner rather than later, whether we're going to play practice/performance or not!

Aumer's is open 7 days a week starting at 11 AM each day. Check out their site at www.aumerssportsbar.com!

Remixxd Eats... Caporella's Italian Ristorante in Uniontown, PA!

Told you that it wouldn't be a long wait for a Caporella's recap! We headed there on Sunday after a performance of "The Little Mermaid" at the State Theatre in Uniontown. The show got interrupted by a "young theatre patron" pulling the fire alarm and evacuating the entire place. But that's a story for another time!

We have gone to all the homes of Caporella's over the years, in Perryopolis, and Rostraver, and now Uniontown, and their food has always been first-rate. We go way back with the Filak family and know how much they put into running their business. It's exciting to see how the restaurant continues to thrive over the years - it was certainly packed on this day!

After some deliberation, I ultimately opted for the Italian sampler: spaghetti, gnocchi, and meat ravioli, with a softball-sized meatball. And no, I couldn't finish it! The portion was enormous, and that was after I ate their fresh-baked bread with dipping oil AND Italian wedding soup. No dessert for me (although my Father-in-law found room!)

The kids also ordered/inhaled gnocchi, and my wife went for the wood-fired pizza, which is always a solid choice. I would have had some if I had any remaining real estate in my belly, which I did not. I guess I'll have to steal a piece from the fridge later.

I also have to add that our service was outstanding, which is noteworthy because the restaurant was dealing with an influx of theater patrons who were in the theater, then evacuated, then back in again, then out when the show ended. The downtown area was a bit chaotic, but the Caporella's team handled the crowd perfectly.

So there you have it: Caporella's served great Italian food! Not exactly breaking news πŸ˜€ But I would not steer you wrong. If you're looking for healthy portions and endless flavor, take a trip to Fayette County and thank me later!

Caporella's is located at Grindle Station in Uniontown, PA. Open Tuesday-Saturday 11-9, Sunday 11-8, and closed Monday. Visit them at www.caporellas.com.

Remixxd Eats Flame City Pizza in Monessen!

The latest concept from Chef Russell Johnson of The Steel Plate, Flame City is the newest addition to the Mon Valley food scene. Located in the former Buzzy Byron's hot dog trailer, you can choose from an initial menu featuring eight different gourmet pizza options, as well as appetizers, subs, wedgies, build-your-own pizzas, and desserts.

We ordered four different pizzas for a recent party we hosted, and each one was a big hit. The Italian Stallion features a base of golden Italian dressing, layered with ham, capicola, salami, pepperoni, sausage, banana peppers, and topped with cheese and creamy Italian. It was like eating a delicious Italian hoagie on a fresh baked crust.

Next up was the Nashville Hot, which featured a white sauce, spicy dill pickles, shredded mozzarella, and Nashville Hot spices. I absolutely LOVE spicy food, so this is a no-brainer for me, although I may lobby Mr. Johnson for the option of shredded chicken and a ranch drizzle!

Third was the Sicilian: the thickest pizza of the bunch, and also the quickest to disappear! We opted to get this one with cheese only, since we were serving a lot of kids, and kids tend to be picky about toppings. But make no bones about it, and this is coming from someone with Sicilian heritage: we will definitely order this pizza again.

Finally, we have the hand tossed pepperoni, which had a fantastic crust. Can't emphasize that enough. If you're going to be a successful pizza joint, you have to master the pepperoni. Long story short: they mastered pepperoni.

So Flame City was a big hit with all of our guests. I'm looking forward to our next order, which I can guarantee will include our first taste of pulled pork pinwheels (appetizer) and Strawberry Pretzel pizza (dessert), in addition to our pizzas.

When I stopped to pick up my order, I was watching a bustling staff working like they were in a booming New York pizzeria. This was not one person waiting for the phone to ring and then popping in a pre-fab pizza. Phones were ringing, dough was flying, customers were lined up, and the smell was amazing. The quality associated with the Steel Plate and a unique menu have already put Flame City on the local food radar. It's exciting to see what the future holds for this new venture!

Flame City Pizza is located at 309 E. Schoonmaker Ave in Monessen, PA. Outdoor seating and takeout is available. Hours are 12-8 PM, Friday-Sunday.

Remixxd Eats....Kodiax Barn & Grill in Charleroi, PA!

We were recently invited to a spur-of-the-moment, mini surprise party, and it needed to be on the later side of the evening. So after a quick search of who would be open and where our party was coming from, we settled on Kodiax, just off of I-70 in Speers.

We have eaten at Kodiax many times over the years, so I knew in advance, having not eaten much that day, what I was getting: the Pittsburgh style steak sandwich. It's an absolutely massive meal, so make sure you are hungry (unless you want leftovers)! I ordered onion rings as my side, and that usually means you get about 4 or 5 of them at most places. Not here. As you can see, there is an enormous portion! As for the sandwich, it's got the standard fries and slaw on top, although their version has creamy slaw, which is fine with me.

I also had to show one of our family's favorite dishes, the steak on a stone. Kudos to the restaurant for offering this presentation, which really makes the dish fun. But it's not just eye candy: the steak is packed with flavor, and you can cook it to your liking on the hot stone.

The service we had was FANTASTIC. The evening's guest of honor was not only very surprised at the surprise party, but also very happy that the restaurant could effortlessly accommodate a party of 14 and have everything go so smoothly.

Axe throwing wasn't available that night, so it remains on my to-do list. That being said, the food alone is more than worth the trip to Kodiax, and it really delivers big portions for a reasonable price.

Kodiax is open every day from 11-11, and they are located at 1001 Guttman Blvd, Charleroi, PA 15022-1075. You can find the full menu and all the info at www.kodiax.com.
