Coroner retires after 50 years of service

VIENNA — David Martin, 78, of Vienna, who served as the second elected Maries County coroner for 50 years, has retired.

Martin submitted his retirement letter to the county commissioners during their Aug. 24 meeting. The commissioners accepted his resignation and recommended Amanda Sandbothe, public administrator and deputy coroner, to take his place.

Schwartze overall winner in Jim Marshall Class 1-3 Division

One meet into the season and it appears the Vienna High School cross country teams are going to be serious contenders for post-season qualifications.

Vienna sets 2026 property tax rates

BELLE — The Vienna Board of Aldermen approved the city’s 2026 property tax rates Aug. 27, setting the general revenue levy at 64.30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation and the Special Road District No. 8 levy at 24.38 cents per $100.

Commissioners announce new lowest bidder for Fly Creek Bridge replacement

VIENNA — Vic Stratman, presiding commissioner, announced at the Aug. 20 commission meeting that BuildTec Construction LLC, of St. James, will replace the current Fly Creek Bridge located on County Road 213.

Stratman said BuildTec was the lowest bidder on the Fly Bridge project instead of Brenneke Construction because the company “messed up” the bid and that MECO Engineering found some “discrepancies.”
