🏗 BUILDERS PERSPECTIVE 🔨
One thing I've learned over the years is that not every bridge is meant to be rebuilt.
Recently, I've had back-to-back conversations about bringing local contractors together, creating stronger networks, and building more opportunities within our communities. On paper, it sounds amazing. 🥰
Truth is, that was always the vision.
Long before Black Girls Build became known. Long before the recognition, partnerships, media features, and growth. We opened doors, shared opportunities, made referrals, promoted businesses, and poured into people because we genuinely believed collaboration could move everyone forward.
Sometimes it did.
Sometimes it didn't.
One of the hardest lessons in business is realizing that talent and character are not always the same thing. A person can be gifted and still make choices that damage trust. And once trust is broken, experience teaches you to move differently.
So we did. 📌
We stopped chasing teams.
We stopped forcing partnerships.
We stopped trying to convince people to value reciprocity.
Instead, we focused on our work.
We built.
And while some called us selfish, difficult, egotistical, or "too independent," the reality is much simpler.
We are women operating in a male-dominated industry where reputation, boundaries, and safety matter.
Over the years, we've experienced everything from professional disrespect to intimidation simply for refusing to shrink ourselves, compromise our standards, or surrender our position at the table we built.
Those experiences taught us to move with greater discernment.
They taught us that not every opportunity is worth accepting, not every partnership is worth pursuing, and not every door is meant to remain open.
Protecting your peace, your reputation, your team, and your safety isn't arrogance.
It's wisdom. 🎯
Black Girls Build continues to support builders, creators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders doing the work with integrity.
Collaboration is beautiful when it's built on trust, accountability, and mutual respect.
That's the kind of network we're interested in building.
The rest can keep talking.
We'll keep building. 💪🏿🔨
