Today, Duck Duck Books turns 5. 🎉

As I look back, I’m filled with gratitude.

To our publishing clients who have trusted us with your stories—thank you. Many of you have become more than clients; you’ve become long-term partners and friends. Watching your books make an impact in classrooms, libraries, and homes has been one of the greatest privileges of this journey.

To our incredible team—past and present—thank you for pouring your talent, creativity, and heart into every project. Your work has touched countless families, and I’m so proud of what we’ve built together.

One keyword to summarize our last 5 years is resilience. We started in the middle of a global pandemic and have navigated an ever-changing publishing and e-commerce landscape. Along the way, we embraced a work-from-anytime/anywhere model, not just survived but thrived, and created meaningful opportunities for so many talented professionals. We are resourceful. We are optimistic. And no matter the challenge, we keep going.

There are also so many moments that make me smile. Receiving photos of children loving what we created. Getting client referrals. Seeing a team member buying her first home. Watching my daughter help pack orders for the very first time. Expanding beyond publishing and officially becoming Duck Duck Collective. Taking my team with me as we build Book an Author. These moments remind me to savor the journey and celebrate the wins, however big or small they may be.

To every kind soul who has been part of these first five years: thank you for believing in us. YOU helped shape who we are today.

Five years down. We’re just getting started. 💛

I wasn’t a product designer. I just had an idea: create a backpack that was adorable, functional, sustainable, and could actually grow with a child instead of being outgrown after one season.

So I sketched out every detail I could imagine, and all the little features that mattered, on a PPT slide.

Fast forward to today, that simple mockup has become a product families instantly recognize.

Looking back at that PowerPoint reminds me that every product starts as someone’s “what if.” Sometimes you don’t need to be an expert to start—you just need a clear vision and the willingness to take the first step.
