In December 2004 the U.S. Air Force inactivated the 20th Fighter Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, bringing an end to the last operational American unit flying the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.

After more than four decades in service with the United States and its allies, the Phantom II had filled roles from air superiority to ground attack and reconnaissance. Its retirement closed a defining chapter in Cold War and NATO aviation history, marking the end of one of the most influential combat aircraft of the jet age.

Meet the Blackbirds; they are all relatives, and they don’t get along. They all want to be the best. 🏆👑

Each one of them has the same engines except for one. The.
TA 12 engines are slow. He has the J 75, not the J 58. He never went Mach 3.
The YF-12 is the toughest and meanest of the Blackbird family because it actually has weapons. However, he was not popular with the Secretary of Defense and did not get a contract. The YF 12 also did not have any spying capabilities, no cameras.
The MD 21 is also lacking cameras; it was not built to spy, but to launch a drone. The D-21 had an important but brief life.
The family’s grandfather, the A-12, preferred to fly alone. But grandpa had a lot of difficulty getting everything done with only two hands. He had one special skill: he could fly higher than the rest of his siblings. Sadly, he was forced into early retirement after only one year of operational service.
SR-71 was the King of the air. The pilot had to concentrate on keeping his eyes on the black line while dealing with unexpected emergencies, such as losing an engine and being shot at by our enemies. His guy in the backseat, the RSO, handled the jamming, keeping the bird on track and helping run the checklist
The SR was very popular at first, but over time, the fighter-pilot mafia decided the super bird had to go.
So now all of these engineering marvels are in museums. See one if you can.
