On this day in 1865, Union soldiers proclaimed the end of slavery. Juneteenth honors the arrival of the Union Army, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, in Galveston, Texas, where they issued General Order No. 3, declaring that enslaved individuals in the state were now free.

This announcement came two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, finally bringing news of freedom to those enslaved in Texas.

In 2021, Juneteenth became an officially recognized federal holiday, making it the twelfth federal holiday in the United States.
