Hello, jiu-jitsu community: Jeff here. Been a while since we've dropped a podcast, but more are coming soon! I'm writing because these times have been tough on academy owners. I know a lot of folks are trying to do the right thing during a pandemic, but aren't getting the help they need to stay afloat.
I'd like to help. I have two ideas, plus one idea. You'll see.
First idea: During the pandemic I made an instructional on the Omoplata, Omoplatapalooza. I'm really grateful to everyone who helped make it happen -- and I'm really proud of it. I feel like it's a solid introduction to the move for folks who don't have it in their game, with a lot of solid techniques and details even for folks who have been training for years.
For the next two months -- from now through September 15 -- all proceeds from sale of this instructional will be going to jiu-jitsu gyms in need.
It's just $40, and you can get it at www.omoplatasystem.com, or ship cash via Paypal to jeff.shaw at gmail dot com or Venmo at Jeff-Shaw-7. I don't know how much the total proceeds will be, but I anticipate supporting one school with this, just to consolidate funds where they'll do the most good. Our Bellingham BJJ students get access to this instructional free, and the reviews have been good. I'd love to use this as a tool to support another academy.
Second idea: When travel is possible again, I'm committing to doing 5 seminars for free to help support academies in crisis.
We will have to wait until the pandemic is over, but I will pay my travel costs, including gas, flight, lodging, etc. You can charge attendees whatever you like (say, $25-30), and whatever we raise you keep for your academy. Time is at a premium for me, so I can only commit to doing five of these, but I'll do those once the pandemic is over.
If you are a gym owner that's been forced to close by Covid and you're struggling, please send me a private message. I'll help if I can. Obviously if we have a prior relationship, that gets you to the top of the list, but I'm open to helping anybody who needs it.
That's the two ideas. The "plus one": We have a safety protocol for re-opening and other ideas for how to get back to training even if the pandemic drags on. It's not financial help, but if you're interested in an idea exchange, I'm down for that, too.
Take care. Do the right things. We'll get through this, and we'll do it together.
