The British live-action/animated musical surrealist drama film 'Pink Floyd – The Wall' was released on this day in 1982. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters, with animation sequences directed by Gerald Scarfe. The film was shown out of competition during the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.

The film's official premiere was at the Empire, Leicester Square in London. It was attended by Waters and fellow Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Nick Mason, but not Richard Wright, who was no longer a member of the band. It was also attended by various celebrities, including Geldof, Scarfe, Paula Yates, Pete Townshend, Sting, Roger Taylor, James Hunt, Lulu, and Andy Summers.

Richie Sambora turns 66 today! Best known as the lead guitarist of Bon Jovi from 1983 to 2013, he, along with lead singer Jon Bon Jovi, formed the main songwriting unit for the band. He has also released three solo albums: Stranger in This Town (1991), Undiscovered Soul (1998), and Aftermath of the Lowdown, released in September 2012.

Ronnie James Dio was born on this day in 1942! He fronted numerous bands throughout his career, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell. Dio is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal vocalists of all time. He is known for popularizing the "devil horns" hand gesture in metal culture and his medieval-themed song lyrics.

On November 25, 2009, Dio announced that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and underwent treatment. Dio died of the illness on May 16, 2010.

Remembering Bon Scott on his day of birth, born July 9, 1946, in Scotland. Scott was the second lead vocalist and lyricist of AC/DC from 1974 until his death in 1980.

With AC/DC Scott performed on the band's first seven albums: High Voltage (1975, Australian only release), T.N.T. (1975, Australian only release), High Voltage (1976, first international release), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976, not released until 1981 in the United States), Let There Be Rock (1977), Powerage (1978) and Highway to Hell (1979). AC/DC's popularity grew throughout the 1970s, initially in Australia, and then internationally. Their 1979 album Highway to Hell reached the top 20 in the United States, and was their commercial breakthrough.

Remembering musician Alan Wilson on his birthday today, best known as the co-founder, leader, co-lead singer, and primary composer of the blues rock band Canned Heat.
