Bruna Press + Archive

Bruna Press + Archive The mission of B R U N A is to create unanticipated cultural conversations. It hopes to give voice to the implicit, the hybrid, and the heterogeneous.

bruna press is a new independent, artist-run publishing venture producing work at the corner, at the junction of contemporary art and experimental writing, among other intersections. Taking inspiration from the possibilities of fusion, inclusion, interrogation, and paradox, the press recognizes that discourses entangle, activating printed matter for reflection of and expansion on this complexity.

It seeks to be a home for unanticipated narratives, misfit questions, and perspectives that have been so far unsung and unclaimed, disregarded or omitted, glimpsed yet barely expressed. The bruna press archive features over one thousand titles ranging from rare, one-of-a-kind artist-made books to academic and philosophical volumes, poetry chapbooks, video art works, and vinyl LPs, among other formats. As a collection sited in a semi-public space, the archive is set up to encourage both personal and collective discussions and explorations inspired by the creative, experimental, and rigorous nature of its content.

Honored to have Lummi writer and Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest contribute to Nancy Holt Stone Enclosure: Rock Rings with their work “Traversing the Loops.”

Priest recalls their first encounter with Holt’s “loops” and the lasting ripples this “spiral of time” has perpetuated since—pulling passerby into its orbit for decades.

Share this spiral with us at our book launch tomorrow 🌀 Event and book purchasing details at brunapress.org

"Expropriated Indigenous land is the foundation of the land-grant university system." Check out this important research project from High Country News: http://landgrabu.org.

This feature is the result of a comprehensive investigation, one that reveals how land taken from tribal nations was turned into seed money for higher education in the United States.

THE REASON NOT TO GATHER
DATA FOR WHATCOM COUNTY

From Heather Shepherd

Dear Friends,
There is a lot of COVID-19 data floating around out there. Here are some numbers estimated for Whatcom County recently sent. It helped me put this pandemic into perspective. I hope it can do the same for you.

- Number of hospital beds in Whatcom County: 253

- Number of ICU beds in Whatcom County: 24

- St Joesph Medical Center hospital census this last
month has ranged from all 253 beds occupied to ~53 hospital beds available (prior to any confirmed COVID-19 cases).

- Number of individuals in Whatcom County greater than 65 years of age: >40,000

-Estimated hospitalization rate for COVID-19 infections: ~15% with “severe illness” (defined as respiratory failure requiring oxygen
support).

- Estimated ICU rate for COVID-19 infections: ~5%
with“critical illness” (defined as organ failure)

- Average length of stay for hospitalized COVID-19 patients: several weeks

Applying the numbers: If just 1% of our over 65 population becomes infected with COVID-19 in the next week, we can expect the need to hospitalize 60 patients (15%) with “severe illness” and an additional 20 patients (5%) with “critical illness”. As you can see, this already exceeds the supply of hospital and ICU beds in Whatcom County, and we know these ill patients will occupy those beds for weeks. This situation of the hospitals/ICUs being completely overwhelmed by COVID-19 is exactly what is happening in Italy.

As we ride this out remember that we are a community.

Practice all the things that are being recommended (social distancing/hand washing/stay home, etc). Take care of one another, practice generosity. Call the elderly. Identify what you have (time, energy, resources) and find a way to safely share it with others.

Last night at the Hiroshima Library, we sat in serious silence for a long moment following Brandon Shimoda’s reading from his latest book •The Grave on the Wall•. Taking in and building this necessary literacy was/is tough stuff, but Brandon never fails to take on the enormity of the event that names his collection. We are willing to join him in these dark depths because he bears a lantern to light the way.

Beautiful talk and discussion today with Kirsten McAllister at the Hiroshima Library. Here is the moment we reflected on historical research as a form of incarceration, a big subject, yet during this time our exchanges were tender, small, slow, and named. We start with reparative relations for that and those that came before us.Thank you Kirsten McAllister for opening a door 🙏🏽

Our Story

The mission of Bruna Press + Archive (BP+A) is to create and host uncommon cultural conversations. We especially are interested in conversations that take place on the corner, between things, in the middle. To this end, BP+A does the following:

-a public events program (artist talks, book launches, performances, workshops, classes, screenings)

-a publishing program (books are in progress but not yet published)

-residencies and retreats for invited artists and writers, especially from the region
