Whats your first hike of spring??

Even though it has felt like spring around Central Oregon for the past 2 months, we can now say it really is!

It's been 9 days since the official start of spring, and we are loving it!

This is the
πŸ“ Metolius River Trail
Camp Sherman, OR

πŸ’™ The Metolius River is a spring fed river. It's an amazing combo of clear and vibrant blue. You'll see a lot of fly fisherman along the trail too!

There are lots of points to start the trail, but the most popular are by the Camp Sherman Store and Fly shop or at Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery

Have you been hiking around Bend yet this week?

Have you ever hiked to a frozen waterfall? πŸ₯Ά

πŸ“Chush Falls
5.9 miles, 850 feet elevation

Winter hiking in Central Oregon isn't talked about enough. The same trails you love during the summer are still gorgeous in the off season. πŸ”οΈ

Going out in the snow does require a little more preparation. This trail needs snowshoes or spikes for your shoes, bring extra layers and don't forget to drink water!

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ As always, don't go alone. Check trail conditions. Be aware of avalanche danger in the area. Check for road closures. And still leave no trace.

Did you guess this popular Bend hike??

πŸ“Pilot Butte
1.6 miles, 450 feet of elevation

This trail is right in the middle of town and a great one all year round.

In the winter the road closes to the top and you can walk up the trail or the road.

Pilot Butte gives you a great view of Bend and the surrounding mountains.

It's time to start planning. Here's everything you need to know πŸ•οΈ

Central Oregon's backcountry is pretty epic... but some wilderness areas require an overnight permit before you go.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Here's the breakdown:

Do you need one? Probably. They are required for all Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and the Three Sisters wilderness areas between June 15th and October 15th.

How to get yours:
Recreation.gov or the Recreation.gov app πŸ“±

The permit breakdown:
πŸ—“οΈ 40% of permits drop at 7:00 a.m. on April 7th
πŸ—“οΈ The remaining 60% open 7 days before your planned trip
πŸ‘₯ Permits are good for up to 6 people

Pro tip: Create your Recreation.gov account NOW and be logged in and ready at exactly 7:00 a.m. on April 7th with your dates and trails already picked out. These go fast πŸ‘€

Leave No Trace basics:
β›Ί Camp 200 ft from water, trails & other campers
πŸ”₯ Check fire restrictions before you go
πŸ—‘οΈ Pack it in, pack it out
Burry your πŸ’© 6 inches, or pack it out!

The wilderness isn't going anywhere... but your permit spot might be πŸ˜…

This hike isn't just close to Bend, it's right next to the Old Mill 😯

πŸ“ Deschutes River Trail
South Canyon Loop
3.1 miles with 137ft elevation gain

This is a great beginner hike right in Bend, Oregon! Especially if you are not wanting to drive far.

The hike along the river is beautiful, and it is a loop. I personally love the west side of the trail, from Farewell Bend Park the best!

If you're short on time, wanting to see how your kids like hiking, or are a beginner yourself, I highly recommend this hike!

Your complete guide to Misery Ridge at Smith Rock State Park. πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ“ Misery Ridge
Smith Rock State Park, Terrebonne, OR
3.6 miles loop or 2.3 out and back
1150 ft elevation gain
About 2-2.5 hours
Difficulty: Hard
Bring extra water!

Parking fills fast so arrive early (especially on weekends)

There is a day use fee per vehicle or annual state park pass. $10 for Oregon residents and $12.50 for non residents

Dog friendly but watch for rattlesnakes on the trail and be mindful of how hot the ground gets!

Best time to go: Spring and Fall

πŸ₯Ύ This is one of the best hikes outside of Bend Oregon! The rock formations are so unique, and the river is stunning. You can even watch rock climbers while you hike! Sunset is the prettiest time to visit Smith Rock, but anytime is perfect.

You don't have to take on Misery Ridge to enjoy the state park either! The river trail is great, or just enjoy the view from near the parking area.

β†’ Pro tip: If you're hiking midday, take the back side up Misery Ridge. You'll be in the shade for most of the climb. It gets HOT.

❗Always practice leave no trace! Stay on trails, and pack out what you bring in!

Three incredible hikes on the McKenzie River, all within a short drive of Bend, Oregon! πŸ’™

Clear Lake Loop – 4.6 miles
Walk around one of the clearest lakes in Oregon and see the underwater forest created by an ancient lava flow. The McKenzie River starts here from an underground spring.

Sahalie + Koosah Falls – 2.6 miles
Two powerful waterfalls connected by a stretch of the McKenzie River Trail.

Tamolitch Blue Pool – 4 miles
A forest hike over lava rock that ends at one of the most unreal blue pools in Oregon.

⚠️ These three hikes can easily be done in a single day if you start early.
Parking fills up fast, especially in summer. If the lot is full, don’t create your own parking spot along the highway or in vegetation. It damages fragile areas and creates safety issues on the road.

Pack out what you bring, stay on trail, and help keep these places beautiful for the next hikers.

πŸ“Œ Save this for your next Central Oregon adventure & follow for tips and trail info!
