🔥Today (10/15) the Deschutes National Forest will conduct pile burning ignitions ~5 miles west of Bend & ~3 miles north of Tumalo Falls. Ignitions may continue on up to 414 acres through Friday.

âš Residents along Skyliners Road & in Bend are encouraged to keep doors & windows closed to minimize smoke impacts. Smoke impacts are most likely overnight & in early morning.

Piles may smolder, burn, and produce smoke for several days after ignition. Once ignited, firefighters monitor piles until they declare the piles out. Please do not report ignitions.

The piles are concentrations of leftover materials associated with vegetation management activities being done to help maintain and restore forest and ecosystem health while reducing hazardous fuels loading.

October is full of surprises. Cool mornings, sunny afternoons, and sometimes rain, fog, or even an early frost. With all these changes, roads can get slick, visibility can drop, and it’s more important than ever to stay alert behind the wheel. 🚗💨

Please remember: watch for pedestrians and always stop for pedestrians. Whether it’s kids walking to school or neighbors out for an evening stroll, every step matters. Together, we can make sure everyone in our community gets home safely this fall. 💛

The Deschutes National Forest plans to start pile burning operations as soon as tomorrow (10/15). Ignitions on up to 15,000 acres may occur this fall through January 2026, as conditions are favorable.

Firefighters implement pile burning to reduce vegetation generated from active forest management such as timber sales and pre-commercial thinning treatments. The piles are concentrations of leftover materials associated with vegetation management activities being done to help maintain and restore forest and ecosystem health while reducing hazardous fuels loading.

Piles may smolder, burn, and produce smoke for several days after ignition. Firefighters monitor piles until they declare the piles out.

Are you ready for winter weather? Signs of winter are in the air with snow falling at higher elevations like Mount Ashland and Crater Lake. When winter weather strikes near you, remember these safety tips: slow down, leave plenty of distance between you and other vehicles, don’t use cruise control, carry a winter travel kit and check road conditions before you leave.

10/09/2025

Snow is expected for elevations above 4000-5000 feet in the Cascades from Saturday, Oct. 11 through Monday, Oct. 13. While only a trace to one inch of snow is expected on Willamette and Santiam Passes and Highway 26 near Government Camp, unmaintained forest service roads above 5000 feet can expect 3-6 inches of snow or more. Hunters and recreators who plan on using these high elevation unmaintained roads should carry a winter survival kit in case snow becomes deep enough to become stranded.

Harney County residents can now recycle their old mattresses and box springs at no cost, at C&B Sanitary Service.

It’s a cost-saving option for community members to recycle these bulky items, instead of paying dump fees.
