The NYT just published a piece on the Bootleg Fire which features TNC lands and the presumed benefits of fuel reductions on large fires. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/05/climate/fire-forest-management-bootleg-oregon.html?smid=em-share

To whatever degree fuel treatments may have been beneficial in the particular area of that TNC features, it ignores the fact that much of the Bootleg Fire had been previously treated with fuel reductions which had no influence on fire spread. Even some other TNC treated sites burned at high severity.

Here is my response to an earlier piece in the Capital Press basically making similar arguments.https://www.thewildlifenews.com/2021/12/08/the-99-year-old-grandmother-effect-how-to-view-fuel-reductions/

When the Bootleg fire tore through a nature reserve in Oregon this summer, the destruction varied in different areas. Researchers say forest management methods, including controlled burns, were a big factor.
