🎤 LIVE FROM DEEP SPACE: The Artemis II crew is currently on the air, broadcasting live to the entire planet!
During the quiet phase of Day 8, the astronauts are utilizing the massive bandwidth of the Deep Space Network to host an in-flight educational event and press conference. Floating comfortably in zero gravity, Commander Wiseman, Pilot Glover, and Mission Specialists Koch and Hansen took turns answering questions from students and journalists back on Earth.
The crew was in incredibly high spirits, sharing breathtaking descriptions of the lunar far side and demonstrating how they eat and exercise in microgravity. Due to their current distance from Earth, there was still a noticeable, nearly one-second communication delay between Houston asking a question and the crew hearing it. This is likely the final time the public will hear directly from the crew until they are safely pulled out of the Pacific Ocean in a few days. The return coast continues smoothly!

☀️ SPACE WEATHER WARNING: The Sun is currently reaching the peak of its 11-year Solar Maximum cycle, and it is putting on an absolute show!
Over the past 48 hours, our local star has fired off multiple massive X-class solar flares, launching billion-ton clouds of superheated plasma—known as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)—directly at Earth. When these massive plasma waves slam into Earth's magnetic field, they trigger intense geomagnetic storms.
The result? Absolutely historic, breathtaking Aurora Borealis displays! Because the current storm is so severe, the Northern Lights are being pushed significantly further south than usual. People as far south as Florida and parts of southern Europe have reported seeing the sky light up in brilliant shades of pink and green. 🔭 REWRITING HISTORY: While our astronauts coast back to Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope is busy looking further back in time than any human instrument ever has!
NASA astronomers have just confirmed a massive, record-shattering discovery. Buried deep within Webb’s infrared data, scientists found JADES-GS-z14-0—the earliest, most distant galaxy ever observed by humanity.
Because light takes time to travel through space, looking far away is literally looking back in time. The faint red light from this galaxy has been traveling through the cosmos for over 13.5 billion years to reach us! We are seeing this galaxy exactly as it existed a mere 290 million years after the Big Bang. What is baffling scientists is how massive and incredibly bright this galaxy is. According to our current understanding of the universe, a galaxy this large shouldn't have had enough time to form that quickly! 📡 AN INTERSTELLAR MIRACLE: In one of the greatest engineering feats of all time, NASA has just brought Voyager 1 back from the dead!
Since November, humanity's most distant spacecraft—located an unfathomable 15 billion miles away in interstellar space—has been transmitting nothing but unreadable gibberish. A tiny memory chip inside its 46-year-old Flight Data Subsystem (FDS) computer had permanently failed. Many believed we had finally lost Voyager 1 forever.
But never underestimate NASA engineers! Because they couldn't physically replace the chip, the team on Earth painstakingly rewrote the probe's core operating code, chopped it into smaller sections, and carefully hid those sections in different, functioning parts of the ancient computer's memory. It took 22.5 hours for the command to reach the probe, and another 22.5 hours to hear back. Yesterday, the Deep Space Network received the response: Voyager 1 is awake, healthy, and transmitting readable engineering data once again! The journey into the endless dark continues!

Just a few days ago, the Earth was a tiny, distant blue marble floating in the endless black void. Today, it is absolutely dominating the windows of the Orion spacecraft! The crew is officially flying face-first toward home, and as they cross the 100,000-mile mark, the sheer scale of our planet is becoming overwhelmingly apparent.
The astronauts are currently utilizing their high-powered optical cameras to conduct scientific observations, capturing unprecedented, ultra-high-definition images of Earth's massive cloud systems and ocean currents. Psychologically, seeing home grow this large is a massive boost for the crew. They have successfully survived the grueling lunar flyby, and now they get to sit back and watch their beautiful home reel them back in. 🧳 PACKING UP IN ZERO-G: The Artemis II crew is officially preparing for the most violent phase of their entire journey!
Day 8 of the mission is largely dedicated to cabin stowage and reentry preparation. For the past week, the astronauts have been living and working in zero gravity, meaning cameras, scientific instruments, and food packets have been floating freely around the cabin. However, that relaxed environment has to end today.
In just a couple of days, the Orion capsule will slam into Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 miles per hour. The rapid deceleration will generate crushing G-forces. If anything is left floating loose inside the cabin, it will become a high-speed projectile that could severely injure the crew or damage critical flight computers. Commander Wiseman and the team are meticulously following Houston's checklists, strapping down every single piece of cargo using heavy-duty tethers and securing themselves for the ride home. The quiet coast is ending; the intense return is about to begin!

🌍 NEXT STOP: PLANET EARTH! The lunar flyby is officially in the rearview mirror, and the Artemis II crew is on their way home.
Following their incredibly successful main engine burn behind the dark side of the Moon, the Orion spacecraft was violently slingshotted out of the lunar gravity well. Now, the crew is officially in the "Earth Return Transit" phase of the mission. They are currently watching the Moon rapidly shrink out of their windows as they coast across the 240,000-mile void separating them from home.
Over the next four days, the crew will be running deep diagnostics on the capsule's heat shield to ensure it is ready to survive the 5,000-degree inferno of atmospheric reentry. But for now, Commander Wiseman and the crew get to take a collective deep breath. The hardest and most dangerous orbital maneuver of the entire mission has been executed flawlessly. Houston, we are coming home!

⚠️ BREAKING: WE HAVE LOSS OF SIGNAL.
Exactly as predicted by orbital mechanics, the Orion spacecraft has officially passed behind the far side of the Moon. The massive lunar body has completely blocked all radio waves. NASA has lost all contact with the four astronauts aboard Artemis II.
For the next 41 tense minutes, there will be absolute silence in Mission Control. But the crew isn't just sightseeing in the dark. Right now, completely out of contact with Earth, Orion's automated flight computers are scheduled to ignite the main engine for the critical "powered flyby" burn. This massive engine firing will utilize the Moon's gravity to violently bend their trajectory and slingshot them back toward Earth. If the engine fails to fire, they will be stranded on an incorrect trajectory. We can only wait, watch the clock, and hold our breath.
