Vallejo’s Surveillance Advisory Board directed city staff Thursday to schedule a discussion on whether to recommend the city rescind contracts with Flock Safety as cities across the country have cut ties with the controversial surveillance contractor.

Vallejo’s contract with Flock for ALPR cameras is also under review by the City Council.

We launched with almost nothing in 2021 and just had a goal of providing in-depth, consistent local news. Since then we've published around 250 stories a year, added a popular events calendar, and we're still growing.

Vallejo’s Planning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend an inclusionary housing ordinance which would require developers to set aside a percentage of affordable homes when proposing development projects with at least 10 units.

Under the ordinance, developers of rental properties would be required to designate 4% of a project’s units as affordable

A group of veterans has been protesting the disbandment of their weekly therapy groups at the Mare Island and Fairfield VAs.

A dozen veterans told the Vallejo Sun that the groups were a lifeline. But last year they ended abruptly, with little explanation.

The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs has canceled group therapy for Mare Island and Fairfield veterans and shortened sessions as wait times have ballooned.

The Vallejo City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to rename Taper Avenue in North Vallejo after deceased Vallejo rapper Andre “Mac Dre” Hicks.

The honorary name “Mac Dre Way” would span the entirety of Taper Avenue, a half-mile stretch beginning at Fairgrounds Drive and ending at Taper Court.

Tuesday’s City Council meeting was met with a full house of community members who arrived to speak in favor of renaming the street. Mayor Andrea Sorce said that Tuesday’s meeting was significant not only for the items on the agenda but because it welcomed so many newcomers to the chambers of the city council.

“Andre Hicks was a selfless person,” said rapper and Vallejo native Jamal “Mac Mall” Rocker. “He helped start my career and helped countless young people get their start in the music business.”

Rocker also spoke to the history of influence mentioning that Mac Dre inspired his rap name Mac Mall as well as others. “Top artists such as Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been influenced by the music and the style of Vallejo and Mac Dre,” he said.

The McCune Collection, on the lower floor of Vallejo's John F. Kennedy library, is a treasure trove of valuable rare books, old printing presses, the biggest assortment of binding materials west of the Mississippi and much more.

The McCune Rare Book and Art Collection includes gems like a leaf of the Gutenberg Bible, and a mid-1800s press.
