Well I found something out today that was a little disheartening. Apparently calcaneus surgery recovery is one of the longest-swelling, slowest recovery foot surgeries there is.
What this means is that I need to keep my foot elevated above my heart pretty much at all times. Obviously I can get up to eat, shower, etc… but then it’s back to elevating. If I don’t, my foot swells up and then begins to throb with pain.
The timeline is expected to be about 12 weeks of required elevation, with the first 2 being the most critical. Then weeks 2 to 6 (sutures removed here), it’s slightly less strict—but any time my foot is down for too long, the swelling comes right back.
Around week 8 is when things start to shift a bit, where swelling becomes more dependent on how much I’m up and moving. But even then, it’s still a cycle of being up → swelling → back to elevation.
So yeah… reality check. This isn’t a “couple weeks and I’m back at it” situation. This is more like being laid up, stuck on the couch or in bed for a good stretch of time, just letting the body do what it needs to do.
Not gonna lie, that part is tough. I’m used to being on the go, working, building, staying active… and now the job is basically patience and discipline. Anybody who knows me and knows that patience is definitely not my strong suit.
To top it off, I ate s**t the other day off my knee scooter and cut my knee, that’s the knee I use on the scooter, so now I have an open wound to kneel on to move around.
