Dear Friend,
As you may know, last year Bennington Review was one of the many American literary presses, nonprofits, and journals that lost its 2025 National Endowment for the Arts funding, as the NEA now focuses exclusively on funding projects “that reflect the nation’s rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the President.” Fortunately, thanks to the generous response of readers, contributors, and our literary community, we were able to recoup the funds taken away from us last year and to keep fairly compensating our contributors for their work. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraising drive or subscribed to the magazine in the past year – we are deeply grateful.
Our reality is that we operate on a shoestring budget at a time when there are fewer and fewer institutional funding opportunities to support nonprofit literary publishing, especially small literary journals; when the entire American academic ecosystem is in peril; and when the cost of printing and shipping continues to rise dramatically. One way Bennington Review stands out as a literary journal is its commitment to training undergraduate students in literary screening, editing, and publishing. Every year, between twenty and thirty undergraduates at Bennington College get invaluable pre-professional hands-on experience as assistants for Bennington Review, adding their voices and perspectives as they train themselves to make discerning editorial decisions.
It would make an enormous difference for us if in the month of April we were to raise $10,000 to put toward the magazine in this coming year. To show your support for Bennington Review and its mission, and to take a stand with us and the writers whose work we champion, please consider making a contribution to our 2026 campaign.
Thank you,
Michael Dumanis
