Bryant Basketball finished 24-9 this past season while going 10-2 in conference play. The Hornets were crowned conference champions and went on to claim the state championship. Coach Mike Abrahamson and the team are motivated as they look forward to next season.

“Once we got a complete roster, we were rolling. We ended up winning the championship. We had a great year, it was not without adversity and things to work through. I wouldn’t say it was smooth all the time. A lot of teams that win championships don’t lose nine games. We just took everything that happened to us and we weathered all the storms. We tried to use it all for good, to build our team up for the end of the year, and it worked out,” Abrahamson said.

Dale’s Donuts was announced for sale in June after 40 years when the owners decided to retire.

Blake Torres, a pharmacist with Westside Pharmacy, has bought the donut shop with Zack Haley and Jared Voch from Joel Atchley.

Torres said his first experience at Dale’s Donuts was during his childhood when his family would visit the shop on weekends.

“As long as I can remember, and like many others here in Saline County, Dale’s has been a part of our lives,” Torres said.

Two Benton boutiques are now under one roof. Pretties & Grace has merged with Wild Boutique, forming Wild and Pretties and Grace - Pretties & Grace / WILD 2.0.

Terri Baker, owner of Pretties and Grace, purchased Wild from Chris Jordan, owner of Stated Apparel. The merger isn’t their first collaboration — Baker and Jordan previously partnered to open a combined Pretties and Grace and Stated Apparel boutique in Malvern.

Jordan reminisced about the beginning of their friendship.

“We became acquainted with each other at ‘Glitz and Garland,’” Jordan said. “We were beside each other there, and I really liked her willingness to help at those events because when you get there everything is on the fly. It was nice to have someone who I could say, ‘Hey I could really use a table.’ She was very willing to help with anything I needed. I was struck by that when dealing with her.”

As they were growing up, Stacey Tyler and Lauren Hundley learned about the joy of serving others from their grandmother, Billie Henry, who turns 100 years old on Sunday, July 27. Henry took her granddaughters with her to deliver meal boxes from the Churches Joint Council on Human Needs (CJCOHN) ministry to those in need and to visit the elderly in nursing homes on Valentine’s Day.

“She just always, always has served and has put others first,” Tyler said. “I genuinely think that one of the reasons she has lived so long is that she has always focused on how she can work to take care of other people.”

That’s just one of the many lessons Henry’s family and friends have learned from her over the years. Click the link below to read a few more!

Whenever he drives across the westbound Interstate 30 bridge that spans the Saline River, Mark Warford remembers his friend, Lt. Paul Baker of the Turtle Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

He remembers how Baker was always willing to help and how Baker always seemed to find work to do at the fire station, even when there was nothing that needed to be fixed.

He remembers how Baker started the tradition for the station to set out the fire engines and give out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

Most of all, he remembers how Baker put his own life in danger to serve his community and how he lost his life in the line of duty on that very bridge.

“I drive across it pretty regularly and always think of him,” Warford said. “Although everything around here is changing, I think it’s good to remember his selfless efforts.”

Band director Keith Matthews said he hopes to have a hardworking and productive season. According to the Bryant Bands website, the band plans to compete at BOA Memphis, the ASBOA State Marching Competition, and several other events, including its own Legacy Invitational.

Matthews, now entering his 14th year at Bryant and 27th year in education, also noted that the Wind Symphony concert band was selected to perform at the President’s Cup, pending final approval.

“We want to teach kids music, and hopefully they love what they’re doing and work hard at doing it,” Matthews said. “That’s always our main goal. I mean competitive band, marching band we want to win our contests that we go to. We want to at least place well and do well with, you know, going to state, or going to BOA Memphis, we want to, you know, rank in the top, at least in the top five, in where we go, especially when we’re competing against, you know, nationally ranked bands.”

Bryant High School’s band is gearing up for the new school year, already underway with rehearsals for its 2025 marching show.
