A new zine!

From the author:
When I was a younger woman, I was one of the founding members of a small, informal commune in Central Missouri. It wasn't like what people show on television, with a bunch of hippies working on a farm. It was a collection of families living in poverty, who realized that they had a better chance of improving their lives working together than they did struggling alone.

The commune lifted several families out of poverty, and helped many more get housing and food. Eventually, it did fall apart, but we did a lot of good before the end.

This zine is the story of the Stone Soup Commune, what we learned from our failures as well as our successes. It's also a simple primer on how to start a similar venture with your neighbors or friends, and how you might avoid our mistakes.

The July issue of Flat Broke is late, but live!

This is a special issue of Flat Broke, in honor of the protests that erupted around the USA last month and the ones that we all know are coming. It includes an article on how to protest safely, one on how to prepare your home for grocery shortages and hard times, and an article on how someone can resist a fascist regime once the protests are over and real life begins again.

Well, I've been going through some garbage these last few months, my apologies for the radio silence. I haven't been idle, though. I've been writing and printing issues of Flat Broke, but only had the spoons to distribute them in person, in my own community.

Luckily things are starting to improve. I'm finally getting my back issues of Flat Broke up and online, for ordering or for free download! Click on the images to find links!

FREE ZINE DOWNLOAD!

We promised that there would be a second issue if the first Flat Broke zine went well, and... guys. You guys are awesome, you made the January issue EXPLODE!

There would be a better photo, but the studio is in the middle of a move and all of the camera equipment is boxed up. Oh well, this is what punk art is all about, right?

Flat Broke is a punk zine, I guess it's turning into a monthly thing, written by and for people like you who survive on almost nothing and have had enough of not being able to do anything about that. This is our voice, and we will use it!

The free download comes with a file that can be read on a phone, and one that can be printed on a home printer if you have one. You have our permission to print as many copies as you like, to share with friends and... well, whomever you think will want to read it. If you want to help us pay for ink and paper, you're also welcome to order a physical copy or any of the other products on our Ko-Fi page!

It's that time of year again, when little fliers full of scary stories about the "true meaning" of Halloween start circulating around. I thought I'd add my own to the mix.

This isn't academic, and I tried not to make it preachy in one way or another. But if you're as bored or annoyed by what Halloween's become as I am, or if you're curious about what it's truly about, or if you're just looking for wholesome ideas about how to celebrate it without bingeing the same horror movies you watch every year, why not give this a read?

The zine is $3 on my KoFi page, written and illustrated by Angie Kay (me): https://ko-fi.com/s/f6a404c3d9

Chapter 4 summary:
The investigation into Doctor Alderman's murder is getting complicated. Officer Gabe Nelson was ordered to bring the only suspect, Tracey Rutledge, back into custody. He failed dramatically... and hilariously, according to his coworkers.

Tracey doesn't seem bothered by the fact that she's going to be arrested for a crime she didn't commit. But the question she asked Gabe is haunting him, and he can't sleep until he answers it. Now he's breaking all of the rules that he's been defending so intently, and returning to the late Doctor Alderman's office to find something he's not even sure exists.

In the blood and the mess, however, Gabe finds a clue that will make everything about this case, and about Tracey, far more difficult to explain.

And the real killer is still out there, narrowing in on his next victim: Tracey Rutledge.

Our apologies for being late. Between the Easter holiday, and the fact that we were RIGHT in the path of the Eclipse, things got a bit hectic this month.

Chapter 3 summary:
Tracey Rutledge is trying to be a responsible adult, to not go looking for trouble again. It's no use, though. She finds a clue that shouldn't be a clue, hidden in Alderman's blood on her clothes. What it is, and what it means, she's not sure she wants to think about. But she knows as soon as she sees it that her teacher's death wasn't just a murder. Something else is happening here, and she doesn't want to know what that is or what it means.

As for Officer Gabe Nelson, he's been sent to bring Tracey back to jail. He let her go, so he has to bring her back. Never mind that she doesn't belong behind bars, Chief Perkins still insists that she's too dangerous to be allowed to roam free. Whether she wants to come or no, Gabe's going to have to confront Tracey and bring her back in.

Unfortunately for both Gabe and Perkins, they seem to have underestimated exactly how big of a problem Tracey can be. She may be trying to behave, but a Southern Illinois woman is always ready for trouble.

(Don't worry, we'll get to Illinois in a few chapters, lol!)

Chapter 2 summary:
Tracey Rutledge didn't murder her professor.

There's no way that she could have physically done it, not in the way that Doctor Alderman died. But as Officer Gabe Nelson begins his own investigation into the case, the stories that turn up about the only suspect get more and more damning. Some say that she and Alderman had been lovers. Others say that they were mortal enemies. Only Doctor Miles Pertwee says that she's innocent, but even he admits that it doesn't look good.

While Gabe starts to wonder whether or not he should have stopped Chief Perkins from arresting her, Tracey herself struggles with memories that the murder brings back to the surface, memories of her own dark past in Franklin County, Illinois. She also has her own questions about the murder, and she knows that she won't be able to rest without answers.

Meanwhile, Alderman's killer begins a new hunt.

And this time, Tracey is the prey.

(Don't worry, we'll get to Illinois in a few chapters, lol!)
