Aletta is taking care of some genealogy business this evening and asked me to write a few words about the Jackson/Houser connection, so I’ll start with my relationship to many of you. My great grandfather was George Allen Jackson, son of Bettie Nancy Harrell and her second husband, William Jackson. When George was born William was almost 50 years old and Bettie was probably closer to 46. George had five older siblings; Bud Anderson (half brother), and Samuel, John Lafayette, Rufus Phylander and Martha Jackson. Bud was about 20 years older than George and Sam about 17 years older. I used to ask my grandfather about his grandparents and all he would tell me was that they were older when George was born and both died when he was young. When George met my great grandmother, Mary Chanley Rose, he was living with his sister Martha who never married and she lived with George and Mary for many years. I have quite a few pictures of her and this was one of the clues that helped me determine that my gg grandparents were likely William and Bettie Nancy Harrell Jackson. I also asked a cousin of mine, Debi Hensley Burgess, who is a genealogical researcher, to look at my DNA matches and from those she confirmed that George was their son. Prior to that I wasn’t sure because of Bettie’s age and I also haven’t found any written record of George Jackson prior to the 1910 census when he and my great grandmother were married and living in Paducah. We just don’t know where he lived after both parents died, and in fact he wasn’t living with his immediate family in the 1900 census. Of course the 1890 census was lost. George told my grandfather the story of being home when Bud Anderson came to the house to tell his mother and the rest of the family “good bye” and that he would probably never see them again. This was around 1892 and George was probably eight or nine years old at the time, so we know from that story he was living with his mother then, but William Jackson had died when George was three.
Samuel Jackson married Laura York who was the daughter of Chesterfield and Louedna Rose York. George Jackson married my great grandmother, Mary Chanley Rose (I called her Ma Bell). Mary’s mother was Euceba York, sister of Laura York. There are more York connections but we’ll save those for another time. I’m repeating some of the names and marriages to help clarify the relationships. It can get confusing.
Samuel Jackson and Laura York had two children, Pearl and Holly. Pearl married James Franklin Houser and they moved to Michigan, thus we have all of our “Michigan cousins” and all of you are also descendants of the Marshall County Kentucky John York and Robert Rose (through Chesterfield and Louedna Rose York) ancestors, just as I am. I have thoroughly researched my Marshall County ancestors and have a fairly large family tree, almost 5,000. I also have Ma Bell’s pictures and found some of our Jackson ancestors including one who is probably William Jackson. If you have any questions I’m happy to share.
