Al-Nawawi explained that this hadith demonstrates the wisdom behind the difficulties and challenges that believers face in life. He noted that these trials, when faced with patience and perseverance, can serve as a means of spiritual growth and purification, ultimately drawing the believer closer to Allah.

Al-Qurtubi, in his book "Al-Mufhim," emphasized the importance of recognizing the wisdom behind life's challenges. He explained that when Allah tests a believer, it is not out of cruelty but rather as an opportunity for the believer to grow spiritually, strengthen their faith, and attain Allah's rewards and blessings.

Having learned the virtual of patience, we should also learn HOW to be patient and what constitutes patience.

If you hear or read bad news, how do you react to it? Do you blurt out some curse words, say forbidden things, or lose your patience. Or are you accustomed to subhanallah, Innalillahi wa inna illahi rajiun, and the likes?

Get used to reacting well because your first reaction is what makes it patience or impatience.

In his book "Sharh Sahih Muslim," Al-Nawawi explained that this hadith illustrates the significance of patience as a virtue in Islam. He interpreted "light" as a metaphor for guidance, wisdom, and clarity that helps believers navigate through life's challenges and difficulties with steadfastness and resilience.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani emphasized that patience provides believers with the strength to face adversity and maintain their faith. He also highlighted that patience brings spiritual illumination, allowing believers to discern right from wrong and make sound decisions in challenging circumstances.

Al-Ghazali discussed the importance of patience as a cornerstone of spiritual growth. He stated that patience purifies the soul and helps believers develop a deeper connection with Allah. According to Al-Ghazali, the metaphor of "light" signifies the inner illumination that patience brings, which aids believers in navigating through life's trials and tribulations.

Because there is reward in patience, Allah will test the righteous to increase their status.

Because Allah does not give us a burden that is more than we can carry, Allah will test those who are patient more and in turn use it to elevate them.

Be patient, join those who are patient, and be patient on top of that because more trials will come as your Lord elevates you even higher.

Islam is not a religion of "death is not your portion". You will lose loved ones, you will lose properties and when these happen, be patient and your Lord will rank you higher and if He permits, in the end, you will be in bliss that will never end.

It is always a win for you if you believe and stick to your faith!

When you are tired you are rewarded, when you are worried or in grief, you are rewarded. Imagine that deal!

Also, we learn from this Hadith that Allah is indeed all-knowing! Who would have known grief will become so big an issue with the world almost 2 thousand years after? Imagine how useful this is to a person living in today's world.

We also learn that Allah is not only concerned with our spiritual life. He also wants us to live a good life and whenever we are afflicted by something that makes this not be the case, which is also part of His decree, He rewards us for it.

Interestingly the specific reward here is that your sins reduce! He drops your sins. So this is also a testimony to His being the Most Forgiving.

Allah is so merciful, He elevates the believer with every step the believer takes.

You may perform an action and Allah will use it to increase you into the rank of those who performed greater actions.

In this hadith we learn that if you look after a widow or a poor person, you are like one who fought Jihad. Or like someone who performed prayers all night and fast all day

Why then will you not look after a widow or a poor person? There are widows and poor people all around you. Do not miss out.

Also, do you then see why it is ridiculous to desperately hunt for people's appreciation? What is better than these? If we internalize this we will do good even to those who do not appreciate it!

With the very worse things that happen to you, you can get the highest status and a free massage to paradise!

All you need to do is to be patient when it happens. Do not utter evil, praise Allah and never react with what He has forbidden.

With this, you can get the reward of a martyr. So what are the rewards of a martyr?

It was reported in the hadeeth of al-Miqdaam ibn Ma’di Karb that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“The martyr (shaheed) has seven blessings from Allaah: he is forgiven from the moment his blood is first shed; he will be shown his place in Paradise; he will be spared the trial of the grave; and he will be secure on the Day of the Greatest Terror (the Day of Judgement); there will be placed on his head a crown of dignity, one ruby of which is better than this world and all that is in it; he will be married to seventy-two of al-hoor al-‘iyn; and he will be permitted to intercede for seventy of his relatives.”

The life of this world is linked to the life of the hereafter.

Just as if you do evil here you may see it in the hereafter, if you do good here you will see it in the hereafter as a worthy investment you have made.

In the same light, the good deed you do for your brother or sister in Islam does not have to be, by itself about Islam, so that calling them to the Mosque, encouraging them to fear Allah and the like are not the only good that Allah rewards. He also rewards you when you relieve them of some stress they are facing in their affairs in this world.

This can be just anything that is not forbidden. It may be removing something that can harm them, giving them kind words when they face trials, or even a smile that makes them feel better.

Anytime you remove some form of hardship from the path of your brother, Allah will remove from your hardship on the Day of Judgment!

Do you remember to pray for the Muslims in general? Oh, you should because you will be harnessing great good deeds in numbers you cannot quantify.

Imam Al-Suyuti, in his book "Al-Jami' al-Saghir," highlighted the importance of supplication (du'a) in Islam. He interpreted this hadith as a reminder to Muslims to pray for one another and to seek forgiveness for the entire Muslim community. According to Al-Suyuti, doing so not only benefits others but also brings immense rewards for the person making the supplication.

Imagine criticizing someone with so much energy. Imagine doing this online where millions of people watch and will continue to watch it.

Then imagine this person had repented of that sin for which you are criticizing him, long before your criticism started.

Then think of this hadith. It would mean you have been criticizing someone who technically had not committed a sin.

May Allah guide us!

This hadith is one of the very many evidence that Islam has a very realistic and practical approach to life. You are not deemed to be above sin as some will claim they are, you are only required to not try sincerely not to move towards sin and whenever you fall into it, you are required to repent sincerely.

Repentance involve: Regretting the sin, seeking Allah's forgiveness and sincerely not wanting to do it again. In some cases it involves rectifying any harm caused by the sin.

Ibn Al-Qayyim, in his book "Madarij al-Salikin," explained that repentance purifies the heart, brings the believer closer to Allah, and is an opportunity to attain Allah's mercy and forgiveness. He mentioned that the statement "the best of those who sin are those who repent" serves as a reminder to Muslims not to despair but rather to seek Allah's forgiveness and strive for self-improvement.

This hadith helps you measure where your soul is presently. Do you still feel bad about an evil action you fall into and do you feel joy when you do good?

When a believer is pleased with their good deeds, it reflects their love for good and their desire to please Allah. Conversely, when they are saddened by their bad deeds, it demonstrates their remorse and their recognition of the consequences of sinning.

Imam al-Nawawi, in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, discusses the concept of self-reflection and accountability. He explains that this hadith is a reminder for believers to continually assess their actions, as well as their emotional responses to those actions. Feeling happy with good deeds and sad with bad deeds is a sign that a believer is actively engaged in self-improvement and seeking Allah's pleasure.

Ibn Taymiyyah, in his book "Majmu' al-Fatawa," states that this hadith illustrates the importance of having a conscience and recognizing the difference between good and evil actions. He asserts that when a believer is happy with their good deeds and saddened by their bad deeds, it indicates their heart is alive and connected to Allah, as they are able to differentiate between right and wrong.

Al-Qurtubi, in his "Tafsir al-Qurtubi," comments on this hadith by emphasizing the need for a believer to constantly monitor their actions and emotions. He states that when a believer is pleased with their good deeds and grieved by their bad deeds, it is a sign of a strong faith, as they understand the importance of seeking Allah's pleasure and avoiding His displeasure.
