The East Bay has a rich literary history—especially the hills. From literary giants such as Joaquin Miller, Jack London, and California’s first poet laureate, Ina Coolbrith, to today’s California Writers Club, the hillsides of Berkeley, Oakland, and Montclair have provided inspiration and a quiet place to write for thousands of writers for more than 150 years.
So we’re trying something new this month: a sort of “double album” issue featuring the “hillside authors” and their books who’ve appeared in Berkeley Hills Living and Montclair Living over the past few years. Enjoy, and support our local hillside writers, the latest in a long and distinguished tradition.

If you’ve ever wandered the winding streets of Berkeley’s hillside neighborhoods, you’ve likely noticed (or climbed!) the half-hidden paths and stairways tucked between homes. But did you know many of these walkways date back to Berkeley’s earliest days of development?

This month’s cover story highlights the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association, a dedicated group of volunteers who restore and maintain these historic paths. They’re also the folks behind the iconic Berkeley Paths map you’ve seen in local shops. Inside, you’ll meet your BPWA neighbors and learn more about their inspiring work to preserve these community treasures.

This month’s Featured Resident is actually a group of residents: the members of Friends of the Fountain and Walk, the Northbrae community nonprofit that restored and now maintains the gorgeous traffic circle fountain and walkway leading down from it (or up to it). They keep it clean and functioning, decorate the bears for the holidays, and much more. Get the full story of the historic fountain’s destruction and restoration inside
