Happy publication day to Moon Portugal: With Madeira & the Azores! 📚

Here's what local author Carrie-Marie Bratley loves about writing this guidebook:

"They say if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life; and it's true. Moon Portugal is now in its 4th edition, and it's been both a labour of love and a joy to watch it grow. After more than 30 years of living here, Portugal still surprises me: hidden nooks and crannies to uncover, inspiring new enterprises to discover, fresh concepts to explore, and ever-changing landscapes to capture. That endless sense of discovery and surprise is what keeps me writing, and what makes sharing Portugal such a pleasure."

"To live in New York is to be in a state of constant discovery where a new adventure is just a stroll or short subway ride away. In writing this new edition of Moon New York City, I took many walks and trips to new and familiar places, including the famously elegant Cafe Carlyle, one of the most intimate rooms for hearing music in the city."

"As a travel writer in North Carolina, I get to write about a state I love, but when I had the chance to focus on Great Smoky Mountains National Park and help visitors enjoy our shorelines to the east and towering peaks to the west, I jumped at it. The Smokies are our most popular national park, and I'm thrilled to offer insider tips, trails, and advice that help visitors avoid the crowds and fall head over heels for this place.

Over the last year I've been visiting more parks, spending hundred of miles and thousands of hours on the trail in search of some of the best hikes, waterfalls, camping spots, vistas and views the National Parks have to offer. Along the way I've trekked through alpine meadows, temperate rainforests, blackwater swamps, and stunning prairies. I've scaled peaks, cooled off in swimming holes and mountain lakes, and gazed at too many stars to count. I can't wait to get back out and find new friends on the trail, a new park to love, and a new place to celebrate."

“In Moon USA National Parks, what I most love sharing with people is how to do the experiences that really speak to me. I recently had two of those in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.

On our off-trail guided backpacking trip from Turquoise Lake to Twin Lakes, we traversed high alpine tundra 150 miles from the nearest road and saw no one else until the sixth day. This wilderness, where cell signals don't reach and caribou gazed at us curiously, captured my heart with its raw beauty.

While roughing it may not be for everyone, we did experience a float plane trip to a cabin on Upper Twin Lake where Richard Proenneke lived for more than 30 years. PBS elevated him and his cabin to fame in ‘Alone in the Wilderness.’ Today, this site is staffed by an interpretive ranger. What a thrill it was to set foot there in person!”

Happy pub day to MOON TOKYO, KYOTO & HIROSHIMA! 🇯🇵

Author Jonathan DeHart says:

During my time in Japan I’ve explored Tokyo’s nightlife, wandered Kyoto’s lanes, and hiked pilgrimage trails. But some of my favorite memories took place at the dinner table over homemade plum wine. Three things I love about Tokyo, Kyoto & Hiroshima:

1. Enjoying the food, from alleys of yakitori (grilled chicken) joints, to Osaka’s deep-fried delights, to Hiroshima’s okonomiyaki scene, to haute feasts.

2. Finding a quiet spot amid the urban bustle, like Tokyo’s Hanazono-jinja or
Kyoto’s Hōnen-in.

3. Exploring the Inland Sea around Hiroshima, from the sacred isle of Miyajima to Onomichi’s retro townscape.

Happy publication day to Moon Iceland! We asked local author Jenna Gottlieb to share one of her favorite spots to visit:

"As a resident of Iceland for 13 years and a Moon Travel Guide writer specializing in Iceland, I've spent a lot of time exploring the island's breathtaking landscapes. Whether it's walking on black sand beaches, hiking in the highlands, or marveling at wondrous waterfalls, it never gets old.

It's tough to pick favorite places since there are so many, but last summer, on a research trip for the 5th edition of Moon Iceland, I returned to a place I haven't been to in a few years, the Mývatn region in the north. After snapping some photos of pseudo craters, I walked over to this viewpoint of Lake Mývatn. It's such a dreamy landscape."

Happy publication day to Moon Monterey & Carmel: With Santa Cruz & Big Sur! 🌊

Here’s how author Stuart Thornton loves to explore Monterey Bay:

“Rich with natural resources, the Monterey Bay is what makes the Monterey Peninsula such a stunning place. While the Monterey Bay Aquarium showcases the creatures that live in the bay's waters and places like Lovers Point Park in Pacific Grove offer the beauty of the bay without getting wet, there's nothing better than getting on, in, or under the water, whether you are stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, or heading out on a whale watching tour. It will give you a richer appreciation of the bay and a unique vantage point to take in the nearby shoreline.”

Moon Oaxaca is publishing today! Scroll to hear more from our author Ashley Roberts:

"Oaxaca is my home away from home, and it was quite comforting to revisit familiar favorites while doing research for Moon Oaxaca, Second Edition. Drinking a cold coco on Oaxaca's pristine beaches, taking in the breathtaking views at Monte Alban, or trying to decide between a memela or a tlayuda for a quick snack never gets old. But what was truly a joy was venturing beyond my well-worn paths in the capital city and the coast to experience the cultural and natural delights of Oaxaca's other regions. Soaking in the sunsets in the Sierra Juarez, wandering the steamy streets of Tehuantepec, being doused in copal smoke after being invited to a neighborhood festival in Huautla de Jimenez, feeling awestruck amongst the cathedrals of La Mixteca... Oaxaca is a world within itself, and that's why it always calls me back."

Hear more about this amazing destination from author Julie Meade:
"Mexico City is an incredibly dynamic place. There is always something new to do, see, eat, or experience here, and creativity is off the charts in so many areas—art, design, food, urban culture, the list goes on.

At the same time, it's a city full of tradition and history. After visiting an avant-garde art exhibit or a new fusion restaurant, it's comforting to check in with an old Mexico City favorite—one of the places I've been visiting for decades. That's a coffee at Jekemir, a visit to the museum and murals at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, or a tequila at the traditional cantina Bar La Opera.

As a guidebook author, Mexico City is a challenging, dizzying, diverse, and deeply rewarding place to cover—and I wouldn't want it any other way."

Meet Jonathan DeHart, author of the new edition of MOON JAPAN and MOON TOKYO, KYOTO & HIROSHIMA (coming this September) 🇯🇵🏯

"During my time living in Japan, my home base has shifted from a small seaside town in Mie Prefecture to the garish streets of Osaka to a leafy suburb in western Tokyo. Throughout that time, I've slowly unpeeled the Japanese onion, one layer at a time. Discovering Kyoto, which is a never-ending process, leads one to Kanazawa, which only then leads to the discovery that there are, in fact, a glut of 'little Kyoto's' strewn across Japan. As I've taken this gradual deep-dive, I've found myself increasingly drawn to Japan's mellow outer-reaches, from Shikoku's vine-cloaked Iya Valley and Okinawa's white sand beaches to sacred mountain paths trodden by pilgrims in the wilds of Tohoku.

"As I researched the new editions of Moon's two Japan books last summer, I was smitten all over again by the Inland Sea, from Onomichi and the string of islands linked by the bridges of the Shimanami Kaido bicycling route, to the string of 'art islands' in the east. This region embodies the essence of Japan, which vacillates between ancient and modern, from the timeworn, salty fishing hamlets to the stunning blend of art and nature seen on Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima. These research trips have infinitely deepened my appreciation for the many sides of Japan, which I'm delighted to share in both books."

🌴 Meet Moon author Greg Archer! His brand-new book, Moon Best of Maui, hits shelves today: https://bit.ly/4lWigaO

“I went from Chicago native to California yogi, jetsetter, adventure-seeker and author. A surprise twist arrived when I found Moon Travel Guides and was welcomed in as a writer specializing on the wonderful island of Maui.

In addition to my fiction and journalistic work, I've spent a great deal of time exploring Maui, getting to know its people, the culture, and the vibrant locale. This all began when I was asked to housesit for friends who lived behind the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm in Kula. They lived on five acres filled with nearly 300 olive trees.

Views of Haleakala became awe-inspiring. I embraced the people and the land, and I was graciously accepted as well. I began hiking through Maui's stunning trails—from the forests in Upcountry to the flatlands in South Maui. Waterfalls, swimming, and other ocean adventures by boats followed. The island became my home, flanked by towering red sandstone walls. I also love visiting the region's surprisingly diverse galleries and art museums.

Recently, on a research trip for Moon Best of Maui, I fell back in love with the many hikes—and sunset and sunrise experiences—on Haleakala, the charted boat rides to Lanai, and the balmy beaches of South Maui. There's no place like Maui. Pure Heaven. Full of Aloha.”

Moon Nashville is publishing today!🎸

Meet author Margaret Littman:
“I chose to move to Nashville in college, and back later as an adult, because it is the quirkiest, most creative place I have ever been. It’s a place where people do weird things for a living and locals and visitors get to be the beneficiary of their creativity. Whether their creativity comes in the form of clothing design or songwriting or one-of-a-kind menus, I feel lucky that I get to explore it all and share it with readers. Nashville’s famous for honkytonks on Lower Broadway and hot chicken and the Parthenon. I love all those things. But when I get to share some of Nashville unexpected gems? That’s a great day.”
