Peeps,

I’m doing a mini online retreat next month with the Closer than Breath community.

I’m gonna about what the lived practice of non-duality looks like for normal people.

So, if you’re someone who went to that retreat once, and you genuinely had a huge breakthrough but now you feel like you’re slipping back into the same old familiar patterns,

Or if you took that sacred medicine journey, but you feel like you just can’t get back to that place on your own,

Or if you just have a regular meditation practice and are curious about Advaita Vedanta — you might be into it!

We’ll look at how to go from fleeting spiritual experiences to non-duality as our lived reality.

October 4th, 10:00am EST. $0-15 donations suggested for the CTB community.

Links in the bio, or comment below and I’ll message it to you.

Virtue and vice, happiness and sorrow are all attributes of the mind, not of yourself, O all-pervading one! you are neither the ‘doer’ nor the ‘enjoyer’. Indeed, you are ever free.

Q: What is the nature of the mind?

A: What is called ‘mind’ is a wondrous power residing in the Self. It causes all thoughts to arise.

Apart from thoughts, there is no such thing as mind. Therefore, thought is the nature of mind. Apart from thoughts, there is no independent entity called the world. In deep sleep there are no thoughts, and there is no world. In the states of waking and dream, there are thoughts, and there is a world also. Just as the spider emits the thread (of the web) out of itself and again withdraws it into itself, likewise the mind projects the world out of itself and again resolves it into itself. When the mind comes out of the Self, the world appears. Therefore, when the world appears (to be real), the Self does not appear; and when the Self appears (shines) the world does not appear. When one persistently inquires into the nature of the mind, the mind will end leaving the Self (as the residue).

What is referred to as the Self is the Atman. The mind always exists only in dependence on something gross; it cannot stay alone. It is the mind that is called the subtle body or the soul (jiva).

Vinaśāyati durdrśta śunyata mandamedhasam, sarpo yathā durgrhīto vidyā vā dușprasādhitā.

A wrongly perceived emptiness ruins a person of meager intelligence. It is
like a snake that is wrongly grasped or knowledge that is wrongly
cultivated.
MK 24.11

“Emptiness makes it possible
for a sentient being who is suffering in samsara to also be a Buddha by nature.
When that being purifies the relative samsaric obscuration that binds it, then it is possible for it to become enlightened.
None of this could be done without emptiness. If everything in existence were substantial and permanent, no one could grow old or learn anything; nothing could change, either for better or for worse;
nothing could be improved, because there would be no room for it. This is common sense if you see emptiness simply. Emptiness provides the questions and the answers
to all the questions, because it allows for movement and change. It allows for insight and realization.”

So there is nothing to accept or reject in the relative condition in a dualistic way. This is very important because some people think that in the primordial state all actions are blocked. That is a wrong idea. It is not like that.

Everything we do, and even the particular way we do it is the manifestation of our interior disposition.

If we are conflicted internally, our conduct will likewise display that same division. Internal conflict is itself the direct expression of our self-understanding. The more an illusory self dominates our direct apprehension, the more our volitional capacity is attenuated, split, divided, diffracted. The more our action is influenced by wrong understanding, the more harm we enact on others, which is to say on our self. In the end—which is additionally the beginning and the middle—outer, inner, and secret are all the arising of the same basic space.

The less we perpetuate wrong-mindedness by dividing the open expanse of knowledge, will, and action, the more we become refuge ourselves.

Rather than only seeking comfort from your conception of God to console you, what if you saw your suffering as God’s suffering in you? What if you sought not simply to be consoled, but to console? What if you sought not just to be held by Spirit, but rather to hold THAT in your mind and heart and speech and action. What would that look like?

What if we could get comfortable with discomfort by engaging not out of fear, but out of love?
