Another late night. Tossing and turning. Mind constantly thinking about the film. We had a good meeting today about the storyline. We found some really interesting letters and photos to help tell the story and I’m trying to keep up with our spreadsheet of all the film visuals we have.

Meanwhile (while not sleeping) I found this photo from May 15, 1927 showing Sam Riddle and his family (Walter Jeffords) and I’m sure, Lizzie Riddle. Did you know Lizzie was very influential marital partner during Man o’ War’s heyday, but stayed in the background and let Sam have his fun in front of the press? She was also from a very wealthy family.

Part of the beauty of documentary filmmaking are the experiences and the wonderful people you meet along the way. Feeling a bit somber this evening as we are putting together a very, very, rough draft of the footage we have (to determine where the holes in the story remain). Happy to report that we have a lot of good footage of our interview with Ercel Ellis. He was such a wonderful and knowledgeable man. Wish we could have spent more time with this gentle soul. Take a ride on Man o' War for us. We miss you. God Bless you Sir. :(

A short reel from the former Glen Riddle training facility in Berlin, Maryland. (In reality, the water tower has been rebuilt and was not in this location.) It’s a hot one today, nearing 100 degrees. Stay hydrated and enjoy your Fourth of July.

Here are a few Google Earth aerials showing Man o’ War’s barn on the left and the distance Will Harbut had to travel to work every day with approximate locations of each structure. I believe I heard that Mr. Harbut walked this distance everyday. If anyone knows differently, please correct me. It also illustrates how massive Mt. Brilliant Farm really is. Mt. Brilliant’s fence line starts right across the street from Mr. Harbut’s former home.

Very pleased. Just returned from a successful shoot, filming a scene outside of Snow Hill, MD for the beginning of the film. Scenes like these help set the tone for the film and bring the viewer into the time period. Here is a screen grab of a moment in the filming.

It’s a sad day. Our Kentucky friend, Ercel Ellis has passed. We had such a lovely day interviewing him for our film. Such a sweet and knowledgeable man. We are honored to know him for a short time and meet some of his wonderful family last May. May he rest in peace as he joins his father who knew Man o’ War.
