Waushara County Sheriff confirms weapon-related incident at Wautoma High School, October 9, -- NO INJURIES REPORTED

This just into the Berlin Journal Newspapers' newsroom from the Waushara County Sheriff's Office:

WEAPONS RELATED SCHOOL INCIDENT

On October 9th , 2025 at approximately 1:18pm the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a phone call about a potential concern about a youth at Wautoma High School. The caller asked if she needed to call City Police directly or if the Dispatch Center could connect her. She was advised that the School Resource Officer was at the High School and that she could contact the school directly. She thanked the dispatcher and disconnected the call.

At approximately 1:26pm the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office received a second call from the same caller as earlier. She advised that she had called Chief Mott twice, Sgt Rosin twice and the high school and no one was answering. At this time she advised that the student may have a weapon. The dispatcher asked if the caller had contacted SRO Hendrickson. Instead of contacting officers via radio, the dispatcher attempted to patch the caller through to SRO Hendrickson.

At approximately 1:28pm the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from Chief Mott in regard to the same incident, as he was out of the area and had been called about the incident at the school. He was advised that the call had just been patched through to SRO Hendrickson. Chief Mott relayed to the dispatcher that there was a student that might have guns at
the school. Mott asked if it had been relayed that guns were missing from the house. Mott advised that the suspect wanted to shoot law enforcement and provided the juvenile’s name. Mott requested that dispatch notify officers.

At 1:29pm Waushara County Dispatch requested Deputy Nelson respond to the school for a possible weapon in the school. Deputy Clark also advised he would respond. Deputy Weber
advised at 1:30pm that he would respond to the school.

At that time Sgt Rosin, who was handling another call at the time, inquired as to what was going on at the high school. He was advised that there was a possible weapon inside the school and that we were awaiting more information from SRO Hendrickson. At approximately 1:32pm SRO Hendrickson advised that he had the juvenile in custody and advised responding officers could
respond to the office.

Deputy Weber assisted in transporting the juvenile to Wautoma PD for them to continue their investigation into the incident. It was later confirmed by Wautoma PD that threats were made
and the student was not in possession of any weapons. Thank you to SRO Hendrickson, Wautoma High School Staff and Waushara County Human Services for their actions.

Harmful Blue-Green Algae Bloom Confirmed in Green Lake

This just in from our friends at the Green Lake Association ...

A harmful blue-green algae bloom has been confirmed in Green Lake along the north and shores, including the deepest part of the lake. This marks the first confirmed offshore harmful algal bloom in Green Lake.

A Green Lake Association (GLA) member raised concerns after noticing paint-like streaks and suspicious water conditions near Quimby Bay. Following this report, the GLA team collected samples both from the shoreline and the lake’s deepest waters. Testing confirmed the presence of harmful blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in both locations.

At the time of sampling on September 16, the bloom currently stretched from the deep hole past Sugarloaf Point and Malcom Bay, continuing along the north shore, as well as from Blackbird Point to the Terrace. Environmental factors such as wind and wave action can shift the bloom’s exact location and density. The GLA team is continuing to assess the situation and the location of the bloom. GLA has notified the Green Lake County Public Health Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to people, pets, and wildlife. Community members are urged to take the following precautions:

· Avoid boating, swimming, fishing, and water sports in areas with visible algae scum, streaks, or discolored water.
· Do not allow children or pets to swim or play near affected areas.
· Rinse thoroughly if you come into contact with suspicious water.
· Report unusual water conditions to the Green Lake Association.

“This confirmation underscores why our collective work to safeguard Green Lake is so critical,” said Stephanie Prellwitz, CEO of the Green Lake Association. “We are grateful to the community member who reported these conditions and to everyone who helps us keep watch over the lake.”

ATTENTION ... Error noted in this week's Omro Herald ...

Following this week's press run, an error was discovered in this week's September 4 edition of the Omro Herald. During the layout process, the same article was inadvertently included under two separate headlines on the front page.

The headline "Winnebago County ATV/UTV ordinance in effect" correctly contains the article regarding the ordinance.

The headline "Southern Winnebago EMS contracts with Lifestar EMS service provider" mistakenly and incorrectly also includes the ATV/UTV article, in its entirety.

Recognizing the importance of the ongoing EMS story to our readers in the greater Omro area, the correct article, in its entirety, is included in this post (please see attached picture), and will also be published in next week's September 11 edition of the Omro Herald.

We apologize for this inadvertent error and any confusion it may have caused. We also appreciate your understanding that we are only human, and while mistakes do happen, because we strive for accuracy with every article, we must also acknowledge when a mistake has been made, because, I as like to say, pobody's nerfect.

Thank you again for your understanding and your trust in us.

Landon Thao scored a pair of goals to lead Omro in the victory, while Cade Boynton and Braydden Gomez-Wagner both found the back of the net as well.

Congratulations to both teams for your great start to the season, and be sure to see the full stories in next week’s editions of the Berlin Journal and Omro Herald!

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers stopped by Markesan City Hall this morning, Wednesday, August 27, to meet with municiple leaders from Markesan as well as the communities of Clyman, Lomira and Iron Ridge.

The topic at hand was federal and state funding for local streets and utility projects in rural areas; funding that is allowing all four communities to move forward with necessary infrastruture projects, each of which is breaking ground in the coming year

For a full wrap-up of the visit, be sure to check out next week’s September 4 editions of the Markesan Regional Reporter, Green Lake Reporter, Princeton Times-Republic and Berlin Journal.
