Recent high school graduates throughout our coverage area performed at a high level in a Fox Valley Senior All-Star Game, as they played at the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Appleton on Sunday!

Kale Bending of Berlin finished 2-for-2 to help lead Team Black to a thrilling 6-5 victory and conclude his high school career on a perfect note!

Grant Bartol of Princeton/Green Lake made it to first base three times by either a hit, a walk, or an error to boost the offense for Team White. In addition, Kyle Bond of the Tigersharks threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout and added a hit at the plate for that squad.

After being a top pitcher for Markesan, Garrett Heberer tossed an inning for Team White at Fox Cities Stadium and had plenty of action in the outfield throughout the afternoon, while also connecting with his bat to make it to first base on offense.

Be sure to read the full recap with quotes from local players and see more photos in this week's edition (July 24) of the Berlin Journal, Green Lake Reporter, Markesan Regional Reporter, or Princeton Times-Republic!

UPDATE… Markesan’s pea supplier canceled this morning… only beans in Markesan!

BREAKING NEWS -- BERLIN KIWANIS PEA SALE CANCELED ...
Green Lake and Markesan sales still on ... Details below ...

The Berlin Kiwanis Club regrettably has announced the cancelation of its annual Pea Sale, scheduled for tomorrow, July 12, due to a lack of available product.

While Berlin's pea sale has been canceled, Berlin Journal Newspapers has just confirmed with representatives from both groups that both the Green Lake Rotary Pea Sale and the Markesan Kiwanis Pea & Bean Sale are scheduled to continue.

The Green Lake Rotary Pea Sale runs from 7 a.m.-noon or while supplies last, tomorrow morning, July 12, at Playground Park, by the dam in downtown Green Lake. Peas are prepacked, with a small bag selling for $2, and a large bag selling for $7.

The Markesan Kiwanis Pea & Bean Sale runs from 10 a.m.-noon or while supplies last, tomorrow morning, July 12, at Markesan Elementary School, on Margaret Street/Hwy 44. The drive through sale features one-gallon bags of fresh peas for $6 per bag and one-gallon bags of fresh beans for $4 per bag.

On behalf of the Berlin Kiwanis, thank you for your understanding about the cancelation, as the lack of supply is out of the club's control, and on behalf of the Green Lake Rotary and Markesan Kiwanis, thank you for your support and understanding during what may be a larger line as community members look to support these two great groups, while stocking up on fresh produce! See you tomorrow!!!

Have you stopped by Berlin's Nathan Strong Park to see the nearly 100 Flags for Heroes display organized by the Berlin Rotary Club?

It's a sight that captivates the heart and soul, a breathtaking scene that is impossible to overlook. Each flag represents a unique and powerful story of heroism, sponsored by local individuals, groups and businesses.

Guests who visit the display are invited to read each tag, to see the many heroes in the community both past and present.

The Flags for Heroes display is nearing the end of its 2025 run, with the flags remaining in the park through the coming weekend before being removed on July 14 until next year.

Nathan Strong Park is located on Huron Street in the City of Berlin, just one block east of Highway 49/Spring Street.

Students may be on summer vacation, but the WIAA remains hard at work governing high school athletics, recently approving changes that will make the wrestling postseason look very differently this coming February.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Board of Control reviewed and acted on several Winter Coaches Advisory Committees’ recommendations impacting season regulations and membership policies at its June meeting on Wednesday, June 25.

Four wrestling recommendations were approved by the board, including one that restructures the tournament series for the 2025-26 season to balance the number of male qualifiers across divisions, eliminate the regional round of the tournament competition and replace the Tuesday team sectional with an expanded team sectional on the second Saturday of the tournament series.

To read more about the changes, including comments from current coaches, be sure to check out this week's July 3 edition of the Berlin Journal, Green Lake Reporter, Princeton Times-Republic, Markesan Regional Reporter and Omro Herald.

American writer and humorist Sam Levenson is quoted as saying, “Don't watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.” For Jerry Bella of Berlin, "keeping going" means designing and building clocks, out of wood and by hand, down to every last cog and gear.

A 1961 graduation of Berlin High School, Bella made his first clock in 1973, and has made around 50 since, including three that can be found in the City of Berlin: in Nathan Strong Park, in the All Saints Regional Catholic School library, and now also in Berlin Public Library.

Named "Skyline of the World" the clock includes around 30 recognizable buildings/structures from around the world, reminding patrons that the library "is where you can go everywhere, without going anywhere".

Read more about Bella and his latest creation in this week's July 3 edition of the Berlin Journal, on area newsstands now!
