Glistening Examples is wrapping up this year with a Jason Lescalleet reissue and a new album from the trio of Cristián Alvear, Alan Courtis, and Alan Jones.

Jason Lescalleet - mattresslessness

In 2002, Jason Kahn published mattresslessness on his Swiss imprint called "cut". It represents some of Jason Lescalleet's earliest solo work and an album that stands as a unique representation of experimental music bridging genres of lowercase music, electronic music, tape music, minimal glitch, and the grey area of American noise. This album shows Lescalleet sharpening his tools and cutting his teeth as these aforementioned genres of music were evolving in the new age of the internet.
Fifteen years later, we bring you this document not only to shine a light on the beginning of Lescalleet's career as a composer but to also demonstrate that some of these early traits have remained in his repertoire as a testament to the timelessness of classic experimental sound work.

Alvear Courtis Jones - A távlat, ha hátulról

This album began as a transandine acoustic drone collaboration, limited to tones and/or the acoustic and physical properties from classical guitars.
Rather than simply recording a wide variety of sounds, rules were implemented, such as procedurally generating sine tones, projected into and through the bodies of the guitars. By exciting the guitar strings with tones that match specific frequencies, partials revealed themselves, sending Alvear and Courtis down new sonic paths to explore. This procedure resulted in full-colored, rich, and natural timbral outputs of the guitars themselves: in addition to resonances throughout the instruments' cavities, all of the sounds arise from sympathetic frequencies on strings and fretboards. The material was then given to Jones, composer ex post facto, using test equipment for spectral analysis of the sound, assembling the work into both colorful and atonal sequences, approaching the process as one might in a laboratory, ultimately layering, sequencing, and presenting the work as his own.

"The pieces that comprise Nature Mirror were composed and recorded during late spring 2017, as the rice fields of Nagano were being filled with water and planted. After a long winter, this process is known as “waking up the fields”.
These paddies surround my home area and are a common sight throughout Matsumoto. Punctuated by lines of rice stalks, the water is still and perfectly reflects the environment above and around. The four tracks on this album were greatly influenced by these flat mirrors of water and contain location recordings from these areas. Stillness, parallel lines and nature are represented in the music just as clouds and mountains are reflected in the flooded fields."
