The Astronomy and Night Sky Summer Series on Assateague Island, Virginia kicks off on Thursday, July 16!

Each event will begin with an Astronomy 101 presentation at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Herbert H. Bateman Education Center Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. followed by night sky observations through telescopes and binoculars at the north end of the beach parking lot #1.

Discover the night sky through observations of Saturn, Jupiter, Earth’s Moon, clusters and galaxies. The series will continue on July 30, August 13 and 27. The Perseid meteor shower will be the focus of the August 13th event when it is at its peak.

This series is a collaboration between Assateague Island National Seashore, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation, and the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center.

The event is free and open to the public. The presentation will occur regardless of weather, however, the telescope viewing is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Park entrance fees apply.

If you find an injured baby bird, it may be tempting to try and feed it when it begs. Feeding baby birds is not a simple task. Not only do baby birds need carefully timed feedings and a diet that meets their demanding nutritional requirements, they must be fed in the right way to prevent aspiration of food or water into the lungs, which can quickly cause pneumonia. Please do not try to feed a baby bird or give it water before bringing it to a rehabilitator. Remember, if you find a wild bird or animal that needs help, call your local wildlife rehabilitator right away! They are specially trained and licensed to meet the medical, nutritional, and housing needs of wild animals.
