April Dutchuk, of Killdeer, earned a service award at the recent North Dakota School Board Association’s annual convention last week.

A member of the Killdeer Public Schools Board of Education since 2020, Dutchuk received the Veteran Board Member Service Award for her dedication and time served as a school board member. The convention was held in Bismarck, Oct. 9-10, which recognized several school board members across the state.

“It was unexpected,” said Dutchuk, who attended the conference. “It’s nice to be recognized, but it was never my expectation.”

Owners of The Grind Coffee Hut in Beulah have made another step forward in its effort to relocate and expand the long-standing drive-through business.

Owned by Bryan and Amber Ronyak, the coffee shop is currently located near North Dakota Highway 49, near Ace Hardware and sits on a piece of property they lease. It has been an ongoing small business for the past 30 years, with the last 10 years being under the Ronyaks’ ownership.

The Ronyaks have plans to relocate the business on a 1.04-acre lot, between Cobblestone Hotel and Barbot Funeral Home, just down road from its current location, also along North Dakota Highway 49.

Although numerous tweaks were made at recent meetings, there were no substantial changes to the final 2026 Mercer County budget from its preliminary form approved early in August.

While budget discussions have been ongoing since that time, the issue came to the forefront during the commission’s regular meeting on Oct. 1. During that meeting, a public hearing was held on the budget, with only one member of the public speaking and no changes resulting from that.

However, commissioners themselves had several changes or clarifications they wanted to address.

To this day, the age-old question of what came first, the chicken or the egg, has yet to be answered.

For the city of Beulah, so too remains the question of whether to allow residents to own chickens within city limits.

At city council’s regular meeting, Monday, Oct. 6, a few members of the public spoke in opposition to approving any kind of chicken ordinance. Craig Askim, the North Dakota State University Extension agent for Mercer County, also spoke, providing council and its audience valid concerns and information that comes with owning chickens.

As a member of the BPS Board of Education for more than 21 years, Hatzenbuhler was recognized for his dedication by the North Dakota School Boards Association at its annual convention held in Bismarck, Oct. 9-10. He received the Legacy of Service Award and a Master Board Member plaque.

The Legacy of Service Award, according to the NDSBA, was created in 2024 to honor North Dakota’s longest-serving school board members and the impact they have made on their local school districts, their communities and the State of North Dakota.

The premiere showings of the movie “Hazel” turned out a sold-out crowd at Bismarck’s Grand Theater, Sept. 26-27.

Based on the North Dakota legendary teenaged heroine Hazel Miner, “Hazel,” produced and directed by Canticle Productions founder Daniel Bielinski, the hour-and-a-half movie tells the tragic story of the 15-year-old’s sacrifice to save her two siblings from freezing to death when their horse and sleigh turned over in a March blizzard in 1920.

The movie was shown twice on both nights, and each show was sold out. “Hazel” continues to play across North Dakota, including Fargo, Garrison, Belfield and Watford City. Bielinski said the movie will eventually be available online, either later this year or early 2026.
