Members and supporters of the Beulah Lions Club gathered at Beulah Cemetery Dec. 6 to place Christmas wreaths on gravesites of military veterans.

Despite the heavy snowfall, several members of the community gathered to help place wreaths on as many as 174 gravesites. This was in conjunction with an event held in Mandan each year, the Beulah Lions Club raised funds to purchase and place memorial wreaths for each military veteran buried in its local cemetery.

The idea for the wreath campaign stems from Bismarck Civil Air Patrol’s annual Wreaths Across America event, which Lions Clubs members wanted to participate. The group decided to conduct its own wreath event for local deceased military veterans, however.

Monica and Jerry Isaak are never one to sit idle for very long.

Not when they ranched and farmed, not when they worked with a helicopter company for vegetation control, not during their time working with a family insurance company and certainly not during the 13 years they owned and operated J&M’s Ace Hardware store in Beulah.

Finally, after years of working together, the Isaaks decided it was time to retire together, as both are reaching the age of 70. For the past two weeks, they have been enjoying their retirement, having sold the hardware business to Kyle Medeares, who also owns a hardware store in Sidney and Baker, Mont.

Despite finally retiring, the Isaaks don’t plan on slowing life down too much.

“We are going to do the things we haven’t been able to do the last 20 years,” laughed Jerry. “Like any guy, I have a garage to clean up and organize, and I know Monica has a few things for me to get done, too.”

With plans to resurface several areas within the city of Beulah’s District 27 in fall 2026, a formal public presentation about those plans was held at Beulah City Hall Wednesday evening, Nov. 19, allowing residents to voice any concerns or questions.

City Engineer Jerod Klabunde, of Moore Engineering, led the presentation, which mirrored the presentation he had given to city council at an October regular meeting. As many as seven residents attended the presentation, which the meeting, in its entirety, lasted about an hour.

Kelsey Glynn knows first-hand the devastation and darkness that can overcome a family mourning the loss of a child.

“Every situation can look so different,” said Glynn, a Beulah resident who has personally suffered the loss a child. “Whether it is a spontaneous loss or the loss of a full-term baby who had complications, regardless of how, it is a very dark and very sad feeling.”

Two months ago, Glynn decided to reignite a flame that began in the Beulah-Hazen communities over a decade ago, looking to help others who would go through what she did. It also gave her the opportunity to get back into a hobby of hers – sewing.

Roughly 11 years ago, a nonprofit organization called North Dakota Angel Gowns was formed, in which volunteers joined together in gathering old wedding dresses and repurposing them into infant burial gowns, which can, at the least, provide a small ray of light onto a rather dark and grim situation for families in mourning. The group had a good following of volunteers across the state, however, when the pandemic hit in 2020, the group almost dissolved completely.

Residents and officials in Beulah are in a waiting mode as the city’s engineering firm works to finish up a design plan for the Main Street Phase II infrastructure project. Securing funding for construction is expected to take even longer.

At the city’s regular council meeting, Nov. 3, city engineer Jerod Klabunde, of Moore Engineering, updated council on continuing work his firm is doing, saying the design plans are about halfway done while the environmental report for the Phase II project is 90% done and almost ready for publication.

Each fall and into the winter season, a need for food, clothing and assistance is at its peak in North Dakota, and the communities in Mercer County are no different.

Students at Beulah Public Schools have been doing their part in helping families and individuals in need, participating in an annual food drive, recently collecting and donating 253 food items to Beulah’s Women’s Action Resource Center. Items ranged from canned fruits and vegetables, soup and crackers, pasta and pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, breakfast items such as Pop Tarts, oatmeal, pancake mix and granola bars to cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, First Aid supplies and shower and bathroom supplies.

The students worked together after the HOSA chapter held a food drive during HOSA Week, as BPS Superintendent Carl Blackhurst then challenged the high school, middle school and elementary school students to fill the schools’ activities trailer full of food and supplies. The BHS Honor Society also got involved.
