Step 1: Do good (acting) work.
Step 2: Be kind and professional.

That’s it.

Actors are often coached to network and get themselves out there. And while a brilliant social media video, or a well-timed email, or a great conversation can be memorable (even fruitful!) the actors who truly stick in our minds are the ones who moved us with their work.

I can remember, with astonishing clarity, brilliant auditions from 20 years ago. I can recall all the actors who came close for a series regular role (14 years ago,) even though they didn’t book it. I know the names and faces of the 12 actors who schlepped to Santa Monica at 5pm (seven years ago,) for a last minute audition because they all came in with open minds, enthusiasm and a willingness to try.

I can shock an actor by mentioning a brilliant scene from their reel. I can name the emotions I felt watching a specific audition performance.

I can’t tell you the name of the actor who sends me (and hilariously, my non-industry husband) a postcard every six weeks.

That doesn’t mean you can or should totally forgo the traditional networking activities. For some people, not only are they effective in making connections, but they serve an important feeling of productivity and / or fraternity. In that sense, they are not pointless exercises.

But craft and professionalism are the things that Casting Directors remember most consistently.

In the last week, I’ve fielded a not-insignificant number of teary questions from actor friends, wondering if it’s time for them to hang it up and go do something else with their lives.

First, let me say that if you’re wondering this about yourself, no one can answer that question but you.

Secondly, let me remind you all that this business has always been hard. Making a living by creating art is insanely difficult. We work in an industry where rejection is the NORM.

So this post is to remind you that you can persevere; by being among the ranks of “professional artist,” you have already bravely done so.

Yes, things feel exceptionally difficult right now. A global pandemic and an historic double-strike in a short amount of time has made a tough career feel impossible. Add to that the constant onslaught of distressing headlines, inside the industry and out, and everyone is truly at their limit.

I feel it too. As do many of my peers, not to mention crew, writers, and all the other crafts.

But if you love this... if doing this job brings you joy... keep going. There may very well be fewer jobs going forward, but there has always been a place in our industry for new faces, for quietly hard-working artists, for passionate fools such as we all are.

It will take much effort: training, business acumen, deep self-awareness… and maybe some therapy.

But if this career is your fuel, persevere.
