THIS FESTIVAL LED TO THE OSCARS.

In a previous conversation, Warren Workman shared why the Utah International Film Festival was created — to open doors for filmmakers outside traditional industry hubs and create real opportunities through community.

What followed is something many filmmakers don’t expect.

Several films programmed at the festival didn’t stop at the screening stage. Through conversations and connections made at festival events in Utah — all open and free to attend — filmmakers met collaborators, mentors, and decision-makers who helped carry their work forward. Some of those films later went on to major recognition, including Oscar nominations.

This is a reminder that festivals are more than showcases.
They can be spaces where careers take shape — often through the moments that happen after the screening.

Sometimes, the most important part of a festival isn’t the award.
It’s the people you meet.

Is horror the new rom-com?

For indie filmmakers… it might be.
Genre films — especially horror — are delivering some of the strongest ROI in independent cinema.
Not because they’re cheap, but because they’re concept-first and come with a built-in audience.

While many indie dramas struggle to break through, horror keeps creating space for new voices, new risks, and festival attention.

So the real question is:
Is genre becoming the clearest pathway for indie filmmakers to get seen?

What do you think?

You didn’t make a film to store it on a hard drive.

Filmmakers use one platform to submit. Festivals use another to review. Then a third party steps in to transfer files. Then another to screen.
And when it’s all over, the film often disappears; not because it wasn’t good, but because there was nowhere for it to live.

eoFest was created to close that gap:
One platform to submit. For festivals to review and program.
If you’re a filmmaker… you need to know what EO Fest is.

Does this hit home for you?

What part of the festival process do you think needs the most change?
