Hogcast: Red Sox Yankees Game 2

25/05/2025

The baseball gods have decided the Red Sox deserve more punishment for their crimes against the sport since 2020.

At the start of Spring Training Cora said the Red Sox would be taking the best 26 guys north. It’s cliche bullcrap every manager says every year. If it was true Marcello Mayer, Roman Anthony would be on the big league club with Kristian Campbell.

Roman Anthony reminds me of another 20 year old the Red Sox didn’t hesitate to bring to the big leagues: Xander Bogaerts. When Bogaerts got called up in 2013 he didn’t set the world on fire right away. What stood out was how he carried himself and how composed he was at the plate. That is what Roman Anthony has been like in the box this spring. Why is he not likely to make the club? Because they gave Ceddanne Rafaela a $50 million extension? Because they haven’t moved a platoon bat who hit .253 last year? I like Wilyer Abreu, but he shouldn’t be blocking the best prospect in baseball when if is ready to play in the big leagues.

Marcello Mayer has 0 ABs in AAA and hasn’t played 100 games in a professional season. I get why he’s already been told he didn’t make the team. Mayer has still been their best player in camp. Mayer may not be a finished product, but the number one reason he is going to Worcester is Trevor Story’s contract. Thanks Chaim.

For those of us who grew up with ESPN’s awesome baseball coverage in the 1990s and into the 2000s, this is sad. On my second ever flip phone, my ringtone was the Baseball Tonight theme.

The sad reality is that ESPN has been the house-network for the NFL and LeBron James for a long time. Their MLB coverage started to slip in the late 2000s, then BBTN could never compete with MLB Network. By the end of the 2010s, ESPN abandoned the sport and canceled BBTN. Other than hiring Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, ESPN’s coverage is kind of worthless. Their unwatchable debate shows barely talk about the sport.

Any of us who are sad, are sad about how it used to be, not how it’s been for the past 10-15 years.

MLB and ESPN have "mutually agreed" to end their TV deal following the upcoming 2025 season, per The Athletic.

Commissioner Rob Manfred noted that he has “not been pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB has received on ESPN’s platforms."

Walker Buehler:

First off, I love the player. You talk about guts and balls, this guy has both in spades. He owned the Yankees in Game 5 out of the pen and was awesome all postseason.

The issue is in the regular season he was terrible, barely made the playoff roster. He only made it because the Dodgers had ten other pitchers who were hurt. The velocity was not all the way back from his most recent Tommy John late in 2022. This is a guy who has had not one, but two Tommy John’s. Buehler is a horse, but a horse that is one injury away from the glue factory.

My issue isn’t the player as much as it is with the organization. Does this move or any free agent signing to date show that the Red Sox are back in business, or is this just more of the same? This club still hasn’t signed a free agent starter to a multi-year deal since Nathan Eovaldi in 2019. So long ago that Eovaldi has since signed two multi-year deals himself with the Rangers.

Another point (h/t ): in 2025 the Red Sox will be paying Buehler and Patrick Sandoval a combined $30.2m. Wouldn’t you rather pay that to one premium free agent?!? I know I would! Unfortunately, John Henry is too afraid of what Corbin Burnes will look like in 2034. Instead of signing the most durable ace in baseball we have a guy rehabbing from Tommy John, and another guy who is not all the way back from his second.

I am not upset the Red Sox didn’t sign Juan Soto, because I never believed they would sign Juan Soto.

13/11/2024

Even if the Red Sox make an earnest effort to sign Juan Soto there is a 0% chance they sign Juan Soto. The Red Sox have never out-bid the Yankees for a free agent. The closest they have come over the years was with Bernie Williams, Jose Contreras and Mark Texiera. They only signed Manny Ramirez after losing out on Mike Mussina to the Yankees.

To say nothing of trying to out-bid Steve Cohen.
