For those who aren't aware and the naive.

Even if you think you're actively not using AI, by using Facebook/Meta, Google, Apple, and Amazon, etc. (it's a long growing list), you are using and interacting with AI.

If you want to stop supporting and using AI, then start taking a look at your devices, services, and personal habits.

Last night, a group of children who were playing basketball in this predominantly immigrant neighborhood saw these posters and became visibly distressed. They ran over saying that ICE had murdered a father and his daughter because they saw the photo of them together. We had to comfort the children and explain that the little girl had not been killed, but that she had lost her father.

Young children process images differently than adults. They often interpret what they see literally and do not have the context to understand the intended message. Instead, they are left with fear, sadness, and confusion.

This is a predominantly immigrant community where many children already live with anxiety about ICE and the possibility of losing a parent or loved one. Placing large posters like these in the heart of their neighborhood can intensify those fears and retraumatize children who are simply trying to play outside and enjoy their childhood in a country where immigrants are being hunted down.

Joan deserves to be remembered, and his family deserves justice. At the same time, we should also consider where these messages are displayed and who will see them. A downtown area, government buildings, public squares, or other locations where the intended audience is primarily adults may be more appropriate places for this type of display than a neighborhood where young children gather every day. We need these posters outside of offices like Susan Collins.
We can honor Joan’s life, demand accountability, and raise public awareness while also being mindful of the emotional well-being of the children in our community. Advocacy should uplift and protect our communities, including the youngest members.
