New Episode is up and it’s a great one! Ryan, Kyle and Evan recap their tasting of the 2021 Goose Island lineup! Our friend Pat was lucky enough to snag the complete collection and graciously invited us to the tasting and it was amazing. Tune in to the episode to hear our thoughts of the reserve series and adjuncted versions; lots of amazing special barrels and tasty adjuncts (the cola one is so good!). It was a special gathering with new friends and incredible beers! Listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts!

Digging into the cellar a bit: Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Rasputin XVIII. Likely lost some s***k but finishes with spicy rye barrel and still boozy. This is always a good test of cellaring which isn’t always a slam dunk with beers but this is holding up nicely!

Aslin Barrel Select - Prestige
Imperial stout aged 15 mo in Weller bourbon barrels conditioned on vanilla, cocoa nibs, and Oreos.
The beer is wonderful and a handful at the same time.  Texture is syrupy thick, bakers chocolate bitter sweet, and not overly powerful barrel warmth.  It borderlines cloying on the sweetness but thankfully gets some restraint from the cocoa nib bitter and boozy barrel.  The first impressions get better as it warms where the natural vanilla and cocoa shine where the Oreo chocolate and vanilla filling are more prominent in the last third; this is where the particles start to get distracting.  Fine carb, ABV in its wheelhouse, and it’s a good sharer due to the richness.  The nose needs a few minutes to shed a slight metallic oxidation but as it settles in, it’s lovely.  Well done Aslin and well done Prestige!

I recall having No Rules for the first time and being impressed; largely overlooked in recent years since so many barrel aged beers have hit the market. Visiting the brewery and revisiting the beer reminded me how great it is - complex, great warmth, sweet, but not cloyingly, and robust. Next time I swing through Grand Rapids, their brewery is a fantastic food and drink spot with plenty of homage to The Big Lebowski 🎳.

When hobbies become obsessions, we often like to share what we know and love about them with others. Although we have dedicated the most time learning the ins/outs of beer, brewing, and breweries, we have also extended our knowledge on those things that complement it: bourbon, wine, coffee, food, and cooking. Listen in to Evan, Ryan, Mark, and Dan, and with periodic guests, dissect those crafts that we love to imbibe.
