On this Yvette Borja and Emily Morel discuss “The Farming of Bones” by Edwidge Danticat, a historical novel about the 1937 ethnic cleansing of Haitians in the Dominican Republic: the parsley massacre, el corte, or kout-kout-a. They discuss the history of anti-Blackness embedded within Dominican nationalism, Danticat’s writing that creates an intimate picture of horrific events, and the intersection of classism and racism that continue to affect the lives of Haitian-descended people in the Dominican Republic.

📣📣📣JOB UPDATE 📣📣📣

Cachimbonas, I’m excited to share with yall that I’ve accepted a position as an Acting Assistant Professor of Lawyering at NYU Law!!!

None of you will be surprised to hear that legal academia is a dusty af institution stuck in white supremacy & misogyny but this abolitionist, abogada de confianza, BAD BITCH salvadoreña didn’t let them push the door shut on me 🤭🤭🤭

I wouldn’t have made it this far without the women of color baddies supporting me and seeing something in me even when I was doubting myself. Not a complete list but I need to shout out: THEEEE Laura Gómez, Jamelia Morgan, Evelyn Rangel-Medina , Raquel Aldana and Jayashri Srikantiah. Without their backing, I wouldn’t have made it to this next step. I’m eternally grateful for their guidance.

Leaving LA is so bittersweet bc I’ve really fallen in love with this city and all my beautiful friends that make my life here so fun. I’m hoping NY will bring fresh energy to my academic endeavors (and the podcast 😉). NY Cachimbonas, any guidance in surviving the city is appreciated!!!

Finally, I want to thank all of the Cachimbonas for riding with me before this legal academia journey started. Yall have given me this platform and I don’t take it for granted for even a second. Knowing I have yall regardless of what dusty academia has to say has been everything to me.
