Today, Western Ag Reporter (WAR) is one of the largest weekly livestock newspapers. We predominately cover 14 Northwestern states but are read from coast to coast, border to border and even in a number of foreign countries. The WAR tells it like it is while also valuing its readers and their opinions. We strive to be "all the news a busy rancher has time to read."
The WAR wasn’t always so named, it began as the Western Livestock Reporter (WLR) on September 6, 1940 in the Old Union Stockyards, Spokane, Washington. Norman Warsinke started the WLR at only eight pages with a year’s subscription valued at $1.
The WLR was established "to supply an accurate weekly source of information" about commercial cattle markets in Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming. Soon after the growing purebred industry of the Northwest needed a voice too, adding to the content of the paper. On January 15, 1941 Warsinke started the weekly front page column, “Comments,” he addressed current issues. Warsinke moved the WLR to Billings, Montana December 2, 1941.
In February of 1957, Warsinke added young Pat Goggins as a fieldman. Soon after, Goggins’ column “As I Saw It” appeared on the second page. It moved to the front page on April 12, 1961 with Pat’s purchase of the WLR.
Agri-News made its debut, in 1968 to fulfill the need for more agriculture, commercial crop and livestock news. Goggins twin sons joined the family businesses in 1989, Joe at the Public Auction Yards and John as WLR staff. At the beginning of 1994 Warsinke’s “Comments” column was brought off the shelf and gained a new home on page five of the WLR with its new author, John.
In 2008, the increasing costs of production and distribution lead to the merging of WLR and Agri-News into the Western Ag Reporter (WAR) with John stepping up to general manager.
Seven short years later “As I Saw It” was retired with the passing of Pat Goggins, John ascended to the position as the publisher moving “Comments” from page five to the front page.
